Good shotgun for beginner...?

Maverick 88.

Remington 870, Winchester SXP, Mossberg 500/590 are all awesome guns, but they cost more. From what I've heard the turkish guns are good, but.... for the price, I've never heard a complaint about a Maverick 88 (which is very very similar to a Mossberg 500).

The Mav 88 with 18.5" barrel will do everything you need it to do, mediocre but reliable. And for under $300.

As for caliber, just go 12 gauge. Keep it simple. Vast and cheap. 8 Pellet buck recoils about the same as full power 20 gauge anyway, but the 12 gauge is still delivering more lead.

My first shotgun was the mossberg 500 combo with an 18 inch cyl bore barrel and a 28 inch modified barrel . This is what i would recommend as you get the 18 inch barrel for bear defence or home defence and the 28 inch works well for shooting clays or hunting if you wish . I bought mine off cabelas for some wheres around 350 , you really can't go wrong with a mossberg . Stick with a 12 gauge 20 gauge is for women and 12 gauge target load is cheap and has hardly any recoil .

You can't go wrong with a basic Mossberg 500 or Remington 870. Great platform to build on once you get the itch. 590A1 or the 870 Police would be a nice choice for a long term stock setup.

As others have said, the 870 is good. Of the three you list, none are particularly quality pieces. Better to buy a quality used item, then when you discover ...more clearly what you want...it will not be hard to resell and get your money out.

Have heard particularly bad stories about Outlaws. If money is the issue, then save for a bit longer.

Can't go wrong with the remington 870 or the mossberg 500. I personally bought the winchester sxp defender came with three chokes . I love the gun literally a work horse I'm at the gun club 3 times a week shooting skeet probably shot over 1000 shells not a single problem . Also can beat the price I paid 510 tax in out the door

I personally have a 870 combo pack with the 28 inch smoothbore barrel and the 18.5 (don't remember exactly how short) rifled barrel. When I got it, it barely functioned, now after shooting several hundred rounds through it, it runs just fine.

My recommendation which hasn't been mentioned is a used Winchester 1200. More specifically based on the list of things you want to do, I would get the defender version which has a 7rd magazine, and a fairly short barrel. The action on these is pretty fast, which based on your list is a requirement, and they are pretty reliable. They also aren't too expensive, you just have to wait for one to come up for sale.

Same here. I purchased my combo for $325 at Cabela's in 2014.
