I have an AyA that looks like it was "ridden hard and put away wet" and an 1897 that need some work. Who would you recommend? And don't tell me "Dean from Goble's" because I will not set foot in that f*%#ing establishment and haven't for over 15 years!

The guy at Epps was recommended to me by Remington

I have no idea about "the guy" at Epps. But I do know this. Epps contracts out SxS work (not saying all of it) to a SxS specialist. And Remington the company is likely to know very little about what makes a good SxS gunsmith.

OP, Do not use anyone who does not regularly do SxS work and specifically stay away from those who do the bulk of their work on rifles, pumps and semi-autos.

Nick Makinson is extremely good. I have never used the Black Diamond in London so have no opinion.

For anything to do with actions, triggers, and barrels, Makinson is absolutely the most experienced and qualified sxs smith I know. Also the slowest turnaround and the most expensive. If the job does not require "the best" because of the nature of the repairs needed then you might get more satisfaction elsewhere even if you need to ship it out there would be a cost and time saving.
Having said that, I love Nick and have two guns in his shop now. However if Dean from Gobles could do the work then would not consider employing Mr. Makinson for that job.
Had Fred from Black Diamond bed a rifle for me - he's self-confident, I'll tell you that. Have not ruled him out from future work but that particular job was not as tidy as I would have preferred nor did it stick to the price quote.
If I recommend Dean do we get to hear the rest of the story?

Thanks everybody for the advice. My '97 is a Black Diamond Trap with incredible wood, so not for any old gun tinkerer. The AyA has some barrel dents and then a reblue and the checkering touched up.
