I'm sad to say that the only thing I forgot on my hunt was the camera!
We just moved back to London after a year away (transfered for work) and I'm so glad to be hunting whitetail in southwestern Ontario again, there is great hunting witin 20 minutes of the city.
After 45 minutes in the stand, 19...no exaggeration....wild turkeys started their morning ritual 40 yards to my right. With all that rackect, I figured my deer hunt was shot, so I stood up to stretch my legs. 5 minutes later a young four point buck was within 30 yards. 5 minutes after that, his 8 point cousin was at 45 yards. They both began working up the dry river bed as I stood frozen in my stand, almost laughing at the unbelievable scene unfolding before me. Almost 2 dozen turkey and my choice of bucks! A bit like a "Pentouse Letter" - "I wouldn't believe it unless it happened to me...."
Both bucks now at 20 and 25 yards and the bigger of the two was now the clear choice. At 23 yards (paced off later) he turned broadside and began to really get funny. Nose up, doing that crazy whitetail highstep that they do when they know things are a bit off. Fortunately for me, he was in a perfect spot and the shot was an amazing double lung through and through.
I watched from the stand as he and his partner both bolted at the sound of the shot, but the eight point only managed about 20 yards before expiring in the scrub. No need to track, I could still see him from the stand, and watched for 15 minutes to be sure he didn't have a last sprint in him....he didn't.
With the same excitement that my girls run down the stairs with on Christmas morning, I practically jumped out of the tree, collected my arrow and called my buddy on the radio and filled him in. A quick field dress later and a long walk out to the truck we were on our way to the butcher.
Great way to spend a Sunday morning! My only regret is that my deer season was only an hour long this year....guess I should shut up huh?
Here's to another great deer season, hope you're all successful! If not successful, hope you all enjoy the mornings and evenings spent honoouring our great outdoors and hunting traditions!
