Hello,

Just getting into reloading as a side hobby. Looking to make some inexpensive rounds to start off with.

What are some good choices for bullets and where do people get them? Looking for 308 and around 145-170 grain. Going to use it for target and hunting so preferably some kind of soft point.

Im going to be using CCI #200 for primers.

Any suggestions for powders? Currently looking at Hodgdon H4895 but not sure what other options to look at.

Thank you for any suggestions!

Canammo has some D4064, $159/5lbs, made by IMR in Canada and it's good powder. 10lbs will get you free shipping. They also have D4895 but I prefer the 4064 version.
Speer and Hornady make good shooting cheap bullets.

Best Bullets for the money are Hornady Bulk 150gr FmJ’s. You can get them at Higginson Powders but there may be cheaper places. Typically they cost a little more than Campros but are far more accurate in both my bolt gun and AR15.

Edit- Just saw you are looking for SP’s. In that case I’d go with Campros.

I have been using Hornady BTHPs to this point for my cheap plinking rounds.

The accuracy has been awesome.

It's usually more cost effective to use cheap fmj bullets for plinking and then switch to decent bullets for hunting. If you use a similar weight often the point of impact is close.

Hornady 150 fmj perform well for what they are. The BTHP match bullets are a good deal too if you can find them. I was paying $.43 per when I could find them.

Check out canadaammo for their line of powders. The 4064 or 8208 would be a good option

165g soft points by Hornady from Higginsons

3040 30 CAL .308 165 GR SP 100 $42.01
3045 30 CAL .308 165 GR BTSP 100 $41.59

I just started some load development with D4064. Using surplus brass and Campro 147 FMJs my first load had an SD of 8... That powder is looking damn good so far.

Sorry. 15 cents each. I grabbed 5k of them from Doubletap Sports.

Have managed to hold 1.5moa out to 400yds in my limited load development (D4064) experience with them.
Not precision but plenty good for when we were allowed to shoot AR10 variants with freedom.

If you're handloading for a bolt gun and not trying for crazy maximum round count at your range sessions, especially if nice tight little groups are your thing, then I'm not convinced that cheap bulk bullets are worth bothering with. Why not stick with the good ones?

Im just starting out. Not making a lot of rounds. Dont want to buy premium stuff until i figure out what I am doing a bit better. Then I will spend more and aim to get tighter groups. Although it will be load development for a hunting rifle, so not many rounds will be fired compared to say a heavy barrel target shooter or semi auto. Its all for fun and tinkering!

Looking forward to seeing what the cheap stuff can do and then use that as a baseline to compare to as I move to better.

You can also check the classified section. Lots of bullets for sale. I have some 308 bullets listed there - for plinking and hunting.

I tried to save money a few years ago by using bulk bullets and got a few boxes of campro 147gr in my 308. Very disappointed, they were awful, at least coming out of my rifle. I loaded the using 45.5gr of IMR4064, OAL 2.8 with a slight crimp in full resized brass, I get a velocity of 840 m/s (that would be 20756fps). I had used a similar load for speer SP and Hornady AMax before and the accuracy was a LOT better, so those campros aren't seeing much use.

Basically: get a good manual, buy a few different kinds of bullets (and weight) and maybe different powders, don't follow internet recipes (yeah, that stuff I just wrote about my load could blow your rifle.. ok it wouldn't but you have no reason to trust me).

Now when my range opens I have some Hornady SST with IMR4166 to try :)

Be safe!
