Hi all, I'm new around here. I'm looking at getting myself a nice bolt action 22. Officially, it will be for skunk control, but I plan to use it a lot at the range (I have a good outdoor range only 15 minutes from where I work). I want bolt action as the skills will be more transferable to my mossberg .308, and I'm also thinking bolt action will be better for the longer range stuff (I plan to enter some rimfire prc competitions for fun). I definitely don't have the budget available for a cz457. My buddy suggested a Savage B22. I was curious to hear what people think of them, and if they're the best value for the money in that rough budget. I don't have access to the EE yet, but what's the market price for a good used one like? Thanks, I'm loving the forum so far

Savage MK2 FV.. Cabelas put them on sale often, can be found used for around 300$

Good aftermarket support if you want to upgrade the stock, trigger, etc

But still let's you pest, target shoot, and shoot comps.

Ruger Precision rimfire all day. Amazing price point for an absolute tack driver (CCI standard velocity for me)

CZ452 would fit your bill nicely.

Old Winchester 69A's would too.

Browning offers up some nice shooters too.

You could hold yer snout up pretty high packing these around.

Oh, you bawt a Savage..............................:onCrack:

For around the $375 to $425 mark, if you are already considering Savage, perhaps look at the Mark II series. That's been around for a long time and as a budget 22 go, it's served generations of shooters well for both pest control and target shooting. It's not a CZ, but it's decent and in my view a good value proposition. I know you mention B22. That takes the banana mags I think so mag capacity is better, but I think it's a relatively newer offering but since I haven't owned one I can't say for sure what the long term reliability is like.

Mine is a Mark II-G, I have had it for about 20 years, and it's been great. Taught my kids how to shoot with it.

The Mark IIs have various letters after the model...if it helps, here are the differences.

B Wood-Laminate Stock
BT Wood-Laminate Thumbhole Stock
C Detachable Magazine
G Hardwood Stock
F Synthetic Stock
H Hinged Floorplate
RJ Royal Jacaranda Stock
EV Evolution Stock
L Left Hand
NS No Sights
S or SS Stainless Steel
SR Suppressor Ready (Threaded)
T Peep Sights (Rimfire)
TR Tactical-Style Rimfire
TRR Tactical-Style Rimfire with Rail
V Heavy Barrel
XP Scoped Rifle Package
Y Compact

I know you mention the 457 is out of your price range - perhaps consider an older (second hand) 452 or 455? I don't know what they go for but the 45x series is both reliable and accurate.

For your price range, definitely a Savage; made in Canada and cheap enough to fit the bill. Never tried a Ruger Precision Rimfire, but it was also high on the list when I picked up my Savage. If you plan to compete, consider a heavier barreled model such as the Mk2 FVSR or "varmint" variants of the CZ. The Ruger should be good to go as is. Good luck!

Savage Mark II with iron sights you will be glad you did

Cannot really shoot PRC with irons. You could get a MK2 FVT. That one has the receiver iron sight and the globe front, while still having the HB, and scope options. The only thing is they're double than just a FV

you can alwas check out 22rimfire.
they are serious about .22's......

I'd vote or the Sav B22 in whatever 'form' - I'd suggest the B22FV (SR if avail) . ( I have a B22 FV ) IMO slightly better than MKII , But it depends on you preferences. The B22 is more convenient with the rotary mags IMO. I have the "A-22" banana mag and it works fine in my B22FV.
PS - also look at Scorpio-s -for an alt.

Likewise. I think if you plan to scope, you'll be off to a slightly bumpy start due to the stock geometry if you pick a MK II. Savage put the same stocks on all the MK IIs basically, and it only suits iron sights. Too low for scope usage or at least, will soon feel like it. A MK II will be a very decent starting point, and an even better value used.

On my Sav B22-FV I put Vortex Pro Low rings and a Covenant-4 6-24x50 FFP scope. The bolt handle cleared OK, but my thmbe kepot hitting the 'Throw-ring' which on that scope has a 'big notched grip' - I hit that sucker with a file ! And I had to get an adjustable cheek rest to get Up to the scope properly, even with the Low rings. And to get Down to pull out the bolt.

I bought my Savage MKII TR off the EE for $400 used in excellent condition.
Good looking rifle with a nice wood stock and shoots very accurate with CCI SVs. IMO the mags are flimsy but work and easy to find/replace.
I've been planning on upgrading the scope but the combo has been good to me so far.....

Nice looking setup. I need to get a similar cheek rest for my .308
