Gonna do some goose hunting on the water this season. Most of it will be done on smaller lakes. May do a couple of lake Ontario hunts. How many decoys on average do you guys use for this. I need to buy some and just wanna get an idea how may roughly I should get. Thanks fellas!

Dave.

Early seaon you dont need much, like 8 usually does it as geese are still in family groups. Later on you bust out a lot of decoys. Im not sure on exact numbers but the more the better.

On water of any size, I would want atleast 15. Hunting the water is a lot different then hunting the X on a field. Unless you are on a very small roost pond, then a few would likely do.

Put some field decoys on shore as well, to help build the numbers.

When hunting ponds for geese I like to arrange my floaters in straight lines of 4-5. I try to simulate small groups swimming to shore or to shallow feeding areas. Put some shells or fullbodies on the shore and scatter some duck dekes throughtout your spread. I don't call too much during the early season because the birds want to group up, a couple of clucks when they are 100-150yds out just to finish them.
