hi, I have a few friends and all of us have just bought some small bore varmint rifles and are wanting to go on a gopher hunting adventure :D does anyone know of a place to go gopher hunting in the south west quarter of BC?

if a few other people would be interested we could get a group going?

Lots in Manning Park if you can shoot around the park visitors.... :d

I believe you need to go quite a bit east to find them.

Yes, shoot "gophers" only on private land, of course with the permission of the land owner, or occupier.
Also, farms and fields are usually not that big and likely have a lot of settlement around them.
In short, the chances of strangers going to a farm and getting permission to shoot ground squirrels on it are slim. It would be rarer yet if they were permitted to use center fire varmint cartridges, as those who do manage to shoot on a farm use 22 rimfire.
Sorry, but I'm just telling it like it is, so don't shoot the messenger!

yes, ive been doing a bit of reading and it seems that you need to be on private land and need the owners permission...

I wonder how long it would take for me to get "shut down" if I snuck in at night and put a tree stand in manning park and dressed up in camo lol...

kid: mom, look at that gopher!

in the background: BOOM!!!

mom: what gopher?

lol :D

im just joking... I wouldn't be that stupid :)

I've had some success with the Columbia ground squirrel hunting (BC gophers). Lots of em round these parts.
had a few pics but this crappy one was all I could dig up for ya'all . On this particular day I was hangin out on a friend's ranch and treating the drummer from the band Hedley to some fine cariboo hospitality LOL

Probably get shut down quicker than an old supervisor I had who tried cutting trees down in Stanley park...

Too bad yer not closer to the Falkland area... I know a few places... The one fella will let you use a .50cal if you do it while his missus ain't home.... An his gophers are the size of a meerkat.

dang, Falkland is a little far for me to drive just to blast some varmints...

anyone know of any farms to talk to between hope and merritt, Princeton or lytton? if anyone has a problem with coyotes or varmints of any sort, im more than willing to take care of them :D

I dunno where a guy would find BC groundhogs in the areas you just mentioned.
They prefer grasslands/ranch type country as far as I can tell...... I'm far from an expert here by the way.
BUT I've been where you are right now so I'll share my somewhat limited experience

I moved to the BC interior from lowermainland 5 years ago and being a hunting nut and seeing that i kept seeing what i thought was gophers in certain areas in my travels I figured I'd try and find out some stuff. So, I found out they were Columbia ground squirrels and as far as i can tell could be hunted with no "bag limit" on private land with owner permission.
cool I thought, there must be lots of ranch and land owners willing to let a guy thin out their numbers. Like on the prairies, the little buggers leave holes that injure 4 legged critters and not just the cows and horses but the odd deer and moose as well.
In the 5 years I've been here, I've only got the opportunity a handful of times and the gopher numbers are very high in many places i frequent. folks are too concerned with liability or a far off neighbor or if they let you do it, others will bug them to come on their property for the same.
the other glitch i found is that many ranch owners here have their land posted no hunting.... this would apply to me and trying to access the land to hunt gophers... so a no go
the only way i see a guy finding a location he can go to year after year and shoot these things in BC , is to be invited by a landowner who has hunting by permission only signage or no signage at all. other than that..... i dunno
