Well, it’s spring time and the little meat bags are up !

The location of a person’s favourite gopher patch is often a closely guarded secret, shared only with those in The Inner Circle.

GPS coordinates are 128-bit encrypted, protected by a retinal scan, and a password in the Urdu language.

My question is this : has anyone encountered a system by which farmers can request that people come out to their land to shoot the little buggers ?

Facebook pages ?

Bulletin board at the local Co-op store ?

Other ?

I’m specifically interested in Alberta (northern half), but also generally interested in what people have encountered across the country.

Years ago people would put 4'x8' sheets of plywood on posts saying shoot gophers here. They would also put posters up on bulletin boards in town with directions and state that if they stopped at the land owners place he would supply the 22 shells.
 
Here in bc it’s not as rampant as the prairie. I got two ranches I can shoot them on. Tons of fun
But they don’t let others on the property.
However I can bring a friend if I like.
 
Ah, gophers! Sometimes the word is passed along from one shooter to another. I shot at a young farmer’s place for a few years. He was happy to have me there, provided power for my trailer. It was gopher heaven. Other places were lucky finds, permission, then go to it.

I think good manners, an appreciation for safe shooting go far to getting invited back. I shot at one fellow’s place a few years back, and he was glad to have me, but he cautioned me about fires and didn’t want to find any garbage left, nor was he really enthused about the use of alcohol while shooting. We got along royally.

One place close to home, my Ontario professional gopher shooter and I have faithfully tried to contain the gopher population. The farmer is a great little Scotsman, and is happy to have us. Last year, he tried to give us money. We assured him that we were happy to be able to help him out.

I look forward to this season, as it sounds like gophers will be plentiful.
 
Z, your question is just like every one of these posts that are repeatedly created by city dwellers. You don't understand how rural folks think. There is not and never will be such a public access/permission system. You need to get to know some people who live and own land in the area you wish to hunt. Expecting someone to post a public notice "come shoot here" is almost never done. Personal contact, polite introductions and inquiries, and especially referrals from somebody who is trusted is what actually works. You can get invited if you make yourself known, stay polite, respectfully ask in person at a time convenient to the land owner and build your "references". A very few exceptions with miraculous easy access to private land does happen, but generally there is no quick shortcut to this process. You need to build your credentials with personal contacts.
