Gopher Shooting - Winnipeg and Area

Wish you had spoken up when I wanted to drive to Mankota, Sask. The best gopher areas I know are S/W of Brandon, but you pretty much have to know land owners in order to get permission. I'm reluctant to drive out that way and not have an invite in advance. Wish you luck. Look me up if you're looking for a shooting partner.

We just got back from Swift Current 2 weeks ago and now I'm a gopher shooting addict. I'd love to find some agreeable landowners in Manitoba but am reluctant to make the 2.5 hour trip just to ask permission. Mind you that's a heck of a lot closer than the 10 hour drive to SK. Anyhow. I'd be up for a road trip too.

Shooster: How do you like that .204 for gophers? I have my credit card half out of my wallet after checking out the CZ527 but am bit leery to be spending such big money on a new calibre. The SK trip teach me that a .243 is way too much gun for gophers.

OK OK. Maybe the .243 is too much gun for Andrew? Seriously though, I'd like a long range gopher gun with low recoil so I can watch my shots. The .204 sounds perfect, especially with the relative rarity of gophers in Manitoba. It's not like where you shoot in SK and most gophers can be taken with a potato gun at 15 feet. Lets do it again!

Andrewe,
You would love the .204. I have a Ruger M77 Mk II and it blows 'em up goooood. My average shot is around 175 yrds which is well within the capabilities of that cartridge. I use the Hornady 32 grain Vmax with spectacular results.
I reload now and costs are down to about $8 for 20 rnds vs $18 for 20 factory shells.

I'd like to find a good place in Manitoba as well. I was in Mankota, SK near the end of june and that was awesome, non-stop gopher shooting action.

You left the promised land for gophers (vast ALberta Prairie), for fossilized Glacial Lake Agassiz (Manitoba). You'll have to make a point of travelling back to the prairies for gophers in any quantity.

Sorry dude.

PS:But the fishing rocks!!!!!

I agree about the fishing, but not about the gophers! I live directly overtop of the underground glacial lake Agassiz (Assiniboine Delta Aquifer) (some of the cleanest most fresh.....freshwater supply on the planet, it is filtered by the immense amount of sand deposited by the Assiniboine entering lake Agassiz after the last iceage) and there are plenty of gophers to be found! You just have to know where to finds 'em!:sniper: I do agree that he left the promised land for gophers, but you can still find some, my neighbours pasture is absolutely full of gophers....I'll post pics of the next massacre...which quite possibly could be tonight!:)

check out the new .17 remington fireball , nice gopher/coyote cartridge :)

If I had a local place to shoot gophers I'd pick up a .204 today. I really want the CZ 527 and was set to buy one until I found that the left hand option cost an extra $250. Ouch. I may just end up with a right hand varmint version.

I suppose I should take a drive to the southwest and look for some good locations. I'm not sure farmers here would be as happy to see a shooter as they were in Saskatchewan.
