Gopher tourism in Souther Saskatchewan

Having read the CBC article about the abundance of gophers in the Swift Current area, I'd like to go and put a dent in their numbers.

I have room for three other hunters in my truck and lots of room for your gear in the box. We'd leave around 7:00 am. We'll split the gas cost evenly.

A co-workers who went there a couple weeks ago said that there were so many gophers that between the four of them, they shot fourteen thousand rounds that day. If only a quarter of those were kills, that's 3500 gophers.

I'm going down to Swift area on Sunday with my boys' and my nephew. The farmer has asked me to stop at WSS and pick up an ammo order for him. This is going to be lot's of fun.

Come on Regina guys; those gophers where talking sh*t about your sisters and they said none of you can shoot straight. Are you telling me you're gonna let them get away with it? Are you?

I got this in the mail yesterday together with a human pinky finger and a note that said "Stay the F*ck away!"

They might take our fields, but they'll never take our FREEEEDOOOOM!

Who's with me?

Them's fighting words, gophers !!!

I was just in Swift Current a week or so ago. (I have some buffalo east of Saskatoon and I was heading there from Lethbridge.) I had no idea that the little varmints were so numerous and cheeky to boot !!! I was thinking of going on Wednesday .. although I have time off right now .. people want me around for various tasks until then .. If a couple of gophers manage to escape .. please let me know with an approximate location and I can be the Mop Up Guy !!!:) I also will be coming with my two schnauzer puppies that are undoubtedly going to be fierce hunters !!! Good luck, Amigo !!!

When are you heading out? I wouldn't mind heading East for a weekend of gopher carnage. Assuming I can find a spot to set up a tent somewhere

When am I heading out ???

Yo, Prosper !!!

I can head out for the Gopher Soiree at about any time ... :shotgun: I have the summer off, being a middle school teacher - but I leave for Namibia on the 29th of July and that'll toast the rest of my time off in Canada ... If you would like to come down for a bit of gopher whacking, you can be met darn near anywhere .... Medicine Hat, Lethbridge, Maple Creek (great bakery there:)) ... or Swift Current ... If Lethbridge, a person can save a few bucks by taking the ol' Silverado ... I'm sure that a person could even sleep under the stars at this time of the year .. or if it is raining, under a cow.:D

I just got from my parents house in swift current and well i was there i went though over 6000 rounds(22lr) between me and my dad. over the 5 days i was there we had to be killing at least 50% GTB(gopher to bullet). I have never gone shooting like that befor, i cant wait to go back.

How did you make out, XMAN ?

Yo, X Man ... How did you make out on your varmint safari ? If there are still lots of them left, (maybe scope was off) I might take the long drive on about Wednesday to finish off the species. :) i hope that you had a great time !!!

too far, unfortunately

I'm on vacation next week, wonder how long of a drive that would be ... Sure would be neat, even if I end up spending a single day there ...

You are about 10 minutes closer than I, but we are still a two to three day drive away. Too far for both of us, but wishful thinking for sure. Nothing like a day blasting mini-hogs....

I was down there this past weekend, had a good time with my son. I am very impressed with the carnage inflicted on gophers by the new .17HMR. It is so much fun it is scary. Longest shot was about 150yds, could have been longer, I'm sure, but that is the furthest I shot. The close range shots were great, out to about 40 yards they explode and fly 2-4 feet in the air, depending on how solid a body shot it was.

Great father/son gopher killin' weekend.

you need to try a 22-250 with a little 40 grainer howling along at +4000FPS. Just be careful, or you'll get guts on yourself :p

Also, a 378 weatherby shreds them into many bite-sized pieces with great efficiency :D

Where abouts were you?

I've was out shooting a couple of times in June in the area around Aneroid, Hazenmore, and Mankota. Gophers are taking over some of that country! The ranchers there are so glad to see gopher shooters I had several offer to supply us with .22 shells!! get an RM landowners map, and ask politely and you will be directed to almost unlimited shooting. We shot about 1000 shots each person each day, using bolt action rifles with 5 shot magazines. Made me wish for a 10.22 and 20 shot magazine!

I just posted a news story about "gopher hunting tourism" in sask in the articles board. My parents own a couple quarters in central alberta that have some infestation and they do seem to be extra bad this year. Maybe had something to do with the mild beginning of the winter??
