Gophers

My son and I went out last weekend and will be going this weekend. Wife works for a rancher and in exchange for hunting on his land I take care of gophers and coyotes for him.

I’ve found mini mags and tac 22 to be the best out of myRuger American rimfire.

I talked to Neal Waltz the other day. He is too old to make the die anymore. He has a friend in Ohio who makes his original waltz design. His name is Greg- (614)580-5002 incase anyone else is looking for a Waltz sizing die. Just waiting to hear back on final price delivered to Canada.
Please keep us posted! I love cci standard and would really like having g a small game version of it.

Two and a half hrs in the patch today. Shooting only the 1710 with the modded Blazer HP. Terminal effect on the gophers is not quite as good as Win 555 bulk. Still a much better option than RN. Happy thing is they cycle well and are accurate. Maybe the difference is 36 gr to 40 gr or the Blazer is a tad harder lead. Still a good day at over 100 down.

I love shooting gophers. My son and I cleaned 400 out of a patch this spring and didn’t make a dent in the population. Now the grass is too high amd they are hart to see.

Must be a lot of us calling this Greg fellow.. can’t take the call right now, please leave a message… the mailbox is full. Goodbye

Lots of rimfire "hollow point" only has a little dimple on the nose of the bullet.

I tried many different types of ammo and eventually settled on Winchester PowerPoint. It is decently accurate in our target rifles and has a huge hollow point that absolutely eviscerates gophers. It's the only ammo I've use for the last 20+ years.

Somebody in another thread mentioned .22 segmented, I tried them this trip and they work quite well, not a huge WAP! but some solid hits with not a lot of running around after and no through and through.

When I shot CCI Quick Shok they literally ripped the gutz out a hole the size of a loonie.
Zero running around..ddrt... dam, those were the days.

I use whatever is at hand. Winchester 555 types, Federal bulk blue box, Winchester-Western (makes a nice whop!), and Aguila (work really nice). I stacked .22 hp deep many years ago, and buy Aguila now 4000 at a time. CZ 455’s and 457’s with smaller Leupold scopes. Mostly 5 shot mags, one 10, and one 25.

I also got a double this year which made me chuckle. :)
The best time for multiples is late May when the babies come out.

We once had a field that was unbelievably polluted w gophers. It was like nothing I had ever since before or since. Doubles became too easy so we started lining up triples. I got a few of those and then somehow managed the Holy Grail, a quadruple. I was amazed the bullet had enough energy to go through 4 baby gophers.

The best day I ever had, between 10AM and 6PM I fired a 1000 rounds (from a bolt action). The ground was not stop moving from 3 feet to 50 yards, it was glorious. The next day there were carcasses everywhere, the coyotes, foxes, badgers, magpies, crows and hawks could not keep up with the clearing.

My neck and shoulders hurt the next day LOL.

I’ve been in a couple shoots like that. Good for the soul.

Thats a lot of rounds through a bolt action. I found my fingers got sore working the bolt, even with the enlarged bolt knob.

You know it was. good day when there are still carcases lying about the next day.

$185 USD for the die. $70 For shipping to BC. Probably have to pay 12% tax on top of that crossing the border. I've been texting with Greg and he is slow to respond.
