Ok so I've lived in alberta for 3 years now and I finally went out gopher hunting. And holy sh...it is it addictive lol. me and the wife went out and to her co workers property and blasted away. we were able to find 3 kills and I'm pretty sure I hit a few more just never found the bodies (yea that's the story and I'm sticking to it lol.)

Here's a couple of pics, some are a little gory but I guess we've all seen this before!

the one on the right took a head shot and half his face was missing. Used my Howa 1500 .223 with 60 Berger varmint hand loads.

first kill of the day

killed with my new CZ 455 .22 LR awesome little gun!

The beaner shot.

Gotta go again next year!

I don't touch the buggers.

Fall isn't the time to shoot 'em. Late spring and you'll get 3 every minute round these parts..

Totally agree, it is a blast!

the wife was spotting them for me! she was all for it too.

I thought those 60's would have done some damage but maybe more on a coyote. I'm gonna get some of those 45er's and see what happens.

I wouldn't be touching those filthy rats. They can be full of worms and who knows what else. That's what those cheap little multi-tools are for - picking up disease ridden vermin. :puke:

You can't get worms just by touching an infected animal. The only way you are getting worms is by eating gophers and then you'd likely deserve worms if you engaged in that kind of activity. The worst you could get from a gopher would be fleas but then you can get those from lying close to a gopher hole so its kinda moot point.

I'd be more worried about all the cow #### lying around than a few dead gophers.

OP, at the right time in S Alberta you can get three gophers with a single shot. I even got a quadruple once. :D

Holly cow, .223 on gophers, you guys have money to blow! 50 cents a shot!
Fun but I'd be a little worried about bullets skipping. 22s I've seen skip and go 100yds past their intended target. I hope you guys took that into account using .223.
Glad you had fun. The most I've picked off my 10 acres was 80 in a day.
However on my friends land, I went though a brick and had to stop cause the sun was setting. The amount of black birds picking off the dead poghers was crazy.

The rat collectors in India use their bare feet to fling them away, probably work with gophers. Also, I need about 2 dozen frozen gophers if anyone can spare any.

I use alot of 53gr vmax they work real good as well. If you want to see them fly 20 feet in the air try em

Start relaoding then. I can shoot 223 cheaper then hmr. No need to worry about any skipping although never had this happen with any gun Ive used. Varmint bullets fragment on contact.

.223 is generally less prone to ricochet than .22lr when using varmint bullets. The .223 has enough velocity that the bullets fragment on initial impact, even if shot at a low angle. 22lr bullets ricochet like crazy because they move too slow to break apart unless the angle of impact is high.

Eeewwww... he touched them....Eeewwww.....

I am surprised there is something left to touch. The Boys down south are hitting them hard in Montana, gutless
