Got a 257 Roberts coming........she's here!

For deer I have used 100 grain Hornady SP, 100 grain Speer SP, as well as 117 grain Sierra SP. All have dropped deer on the sport. I have used 100 grain Nosler Partitions, and it worked, but no better or faster than the other ones. Passed right through is passed right through! Never felt the need to use bonded or other bullets.

As much as I like my 257R, I think that the 243 is a better round in some respects.

- 243 velocity is pretty much on par with similar bullet weights with the 257.
- The 243 is better suited for a short action.
- Factory ammo is much easier to find as is brass for reloading.
- Small detail, but there is a much larger bullet selection with the 243 and many of those bullets are better suited for LR shooting.

FLAME AWAY!!:stirthepot2:

Ya But, 257 ROBERTS sounds way COOLER than just 243.
Mind you, I have nothing against 243. Both are very good cartridges.

The Roberts is one of my favorite rounds... all of my kids started deer hunting with one, and I often carry it when I am serious about meat hunting late season prop-heads. I have been using the 115 NBT Hunting bullet and have found it to be accurate and effective.

P.S - ignore SC, he likes to play devil's advocate with the .243 over .257 R, but truth be told his head is talking, not his heart.

I will have to buy a few boxes and see how she goes, can't seem to find any brass online. May have to buy a few boxes of loaded ammo.
I was looking for some R-P brass a while back and had to resort to getting some in rhe States. I would suggest buying a lifetime supply all the same maker if you do find some. Lee collet dies and annealing will greatly extend case life.

Well just picked her up from the post office! Has some great figure in the wood for a Ruger but the for end may need to be free floated. Got some dies in the mail and another good fellow is going to grab me some brass, all I need now is a scope to drop on it!

I had a 700 Classic in 257 Roberts. After the factory barrel proved to be super fussy, I rebarrelled it with a Shilen 1-10" twist 24" tube.
The thing turned out to be a zinger....very accurate, and fast. Using Reloder 22, I could reach 3100 fps with the 120 partition, and with
AMS 47SB (lot 10) and the 100 partition, right at 3300. Try that with the 243, SC, lol.
It was dynamite on every animal I and my son shot with it. [2 moose as well as deer and black bear]
It is resident in a close friend's place now, sold to his son as a beginning hunter, and I know it continues to perform very well. D.

3100 fps with 120's!? That is screening fast, I haven't seen any load data that even uses Reloaded 22, will have to do a little more searching because I have 3 lbs of that I'm the cabinet.

Just check Nosler' s online load data and they run 100grs at max 3100 fps.

freddyfour ... nice looking Ruger !

I have a Rem. Mod. 700 Mountain, wood & Blue in 257 Bob. From the Serial, it's a 1991. Bought it NIB from a "collector" looking to thin his inventory in 2008. It wears a Leupold
VX-2 in 1-4x, QR bases and super low rings. All my deer hunting in Central Ontario (Haliburton area) is in thick bush ... shots are very seldom over 75 yards and usually something about half that. I load H-4831 with 100 gr. Nosler BT's ... and despite what others might say (or have read) they work just great for me. I shoot coyotes on open farmlands with them around home in the winter, switching over to VX-2 in 2-7x. No problems, right out to 300 yards !

Nosler's loads are "soft" in "most" 257 Roberts Rifles.
Still in good taste to work up from below safely.
The loads I shot were not extreme, with brass loaded 7 or 8 times and primer pockets still tight. D.

Those are SMOKIN' loads right there. Getting up there with 25-06. I got 3200 with 100s in my 257, but backed it off to 3100 for accuracy sake.

Besides, I only said the 243 was better in SOME respects. :)

I looked hard for one of those, finally finding one that was owned by a nice old gentleman who lived in Owen Sound. I tried for a couple yrs to buy that, but no deal. I ended up having mine built instead.

The 25 cals are often overlooked and definitely underappreciated. They are a great combo of speed/power/recoil and suitable for most game we have.

Freddy,
My Ruger looks very similar as far as wood is concerned.
Some things you may want to look at, the magazine box, make sure it is a tad loose when the floor plate is open. I found that if it is tight it may bind the action and create accuracy issues. I also made sure the bbl. is floated. That helped my rifle a lot. They have a bit of a short throat or at least my has. I am reluctant to alter that. With the long action you can't get all the length that you might want with heavier bullets, but it works for lighter bullets.

It looks really nice and I hope you enjoy it as much as I do.

David

I will see how she shoots before I worry about free floating but at just a glance the stock fits awfully tight to the barrel. I've got a scope, brass and dies all in the mail so should all come together shortly I hope!
