I picked up a Rem 700 5R in .308 the other day as my first Long Range rifle and im new to scopes as well. I am looking at a Sightron SII 4-16x42mm scope and am wondering if this is a good scope for 250-400meter range? Also I know this is a real newbie question but can someone explain to me what the

4- stands for, 16 stands for and 42mm means
in 4-16x42mm.
Sorry for the all the questions.

4 is the lowest magnification of the scope
16 is the highest

42mm is the size of the objective.

so the scope will provide zoom from 4x all the way to 16x, incrementally

Congrats on your new purchase. I won't be much help, but will definitely follow with interest as I also just bought a 700 (XCT Tactical Compact), also first long range rifle and don't have a clue what scope to put on it. The more questions I ask, the more questions I end up with. I'll forward anything I find out. Good luck!
