Awesome buy you're gonna love that shotgun! 870 is bulletproof, totally reliable and fun. Slugs gotta bit of a kick but at least youll be on the right end of em. Enjoy your new toy, you are playing with many years of tradition :)

I have read nothing but good reviews about them. Sure they are better shotguns but I think this one will do me just right. I got like $60 worth of shells with this also. I will be using this for everything but mostly target practise. This is a 28" barrel, I was hoping for a 26" barrel but they didn't have it so I am fine with this.

Can somebody recommend what chokes I should use with slugs and buckshots? The dude at the store said improved is better for slugs and buckshot, is that correct?

Hopefully the recoil isn't that bad. I have an extra Limbsaver if it is too much for me. The only thing I can't shoot out of this is sabout slugs or something which I don't mind too much because I can always buy a rifled barrel.

Well it was a good buy. Now i have a 30-06, 22 and this 12 gauge.

:)

Is there a certain brand I should be trying? I bought a few winchester slugs in 3" and 2 3/4 also since I didn't see anything else from other companies but I was also in a rush.

Is there really a differance from 2 3/4 to 3" anyways in slugs or buckshots? Like why would somebody use a 2 3/4 ?

I am looking into buying a improved choke, the gun came with a mod choke.

Thanks

Slugs and buckshot will both go thru your mod choke ok, but you may (or may not) get better accuracy with slugs thru an improved cyllinder choke. Same goes for the pattern with the buckshot. Every gun is a bit different, so you'll just have to try it and find out.

As for 2-3/4 vs 3", you usually get a bit more speed and/or load weight (heavier slug or more pellets) with 3". You also get more recoil along with it. I use 3" steel loads for waterfowl for the extra speed. Pretty much 2-3/4" for anything else.

By the way, there is such a thing as an improved modified choke as well (tighter than mod, not as tight as full), so if you go to the gun shop to get one, be specific, don't just ask for an improved choke.

That is a bra. It's not my bra. It was on a girls bed I know and thats where I took the pics because she has a digital camera. lol

Well I went out and shot it today. I shot some buck shots, slugs, and #6's Man, does thing thing ever do some damage. Recoil isn't bad escept with the slugs but even then it's ok. It blew wholes in tree trucks like I have never seen before. I really like the guygun and probably like it more then the 30-06 I have. What a great gun. Only one weird thing happened today, I went to pump it to reload but I couldn't. I couldn't even unload the gun, I have to take the barrel off and take the empty shell out and then everything was ok.

Well I will be going back out soon to see what patterns I get with the gun.

Thanks

I have a 26" super magnum synthetic (shoots up to 3 1/2" shells , not like I need it:) ) and love it aswell. except I don't have a hard shell case for it yet, just a $20 gun sock I bought with the gun.
I am loving target shooting with slugs! I'm really surprised at how acurate the bead sight is. I shot within 1 inch of a bullseye from 50 meters away with a 2 3/4" slug yesterday (I need to try more distance yet) .

as for the fail to eject, that has happened to me aswell. I'm not sure why it happens, maybe bad cartriges? hopefully someone here has an explanation/fix

enjoy!

Sounds like you are having some fun with your new gun Cornflakes.
Question... when the gun would not pump was there an empty shell stuck in the chamber or what? Did the pump slide back and fail to pick up the empty? How did you remove the cartridge, was there any damage to the rim of the cartridge?
I just wonder if it was Ammo related or Extractor related?

Oh yeah... and were the trees tasty or were they the varmint kind.....

Dollars to doughnuts the ammo was the cheap sh*t from WalMart/CTC.

Steel rimmed stuff. CRAP!!!!

The steel doesn't spring back like brass. I will not feed that in any of my shotties.

RePete.

My 870 fails to open when is very very hot, after strings and strings of full magazines shot in a rush by a psyhopatic CGN member here (Dr.Lector is his name on CGN, but sometimes we call him "belt fed") in what we call rapid fire trap, but Dr.Lector also shoots fridges, empty plastic buckets, sofas and everything he finds in that piece of woods we use as a range.
I somehow suspected that the plastic shell's surface gets melted and stuck to the chamber when it contacts it, but I was told that is not quite likely.
I am still waiting for an explanation. I am glad that I am not alone.
If you meet Dr.Lector, don't lend him the gun, he will jam it.

I am having tons of fun with the new shotgun. It's a blast to shoot and hopefully on Monday, I will go and try it out again unless it's raining.

As for the jam. I was just shooting some Winchester #6's and it jammed. I went to reload and the pump thingy that slides wouldn't slide. The little thing that you press to unload the gun wouldn't budge either. I had to take off the barrel to remove the empty shell and then everything was good again. I looked at the shell but didn't notice any damage or anything. It looked like any other shell. I dunno what it was but hopefully it doesn't happened again.

The tree trucks were pretty tasty. I suggest you come out and try for yourself. :)

This could have been the issue. I did notice the barrel getting really hot, compared to the 30-06. I would give it extra time to cool off after that since the barrel got so hot in such a short amount of time. I must have put $60 worth of shells through it today

:D

The brass on the shells expands slightly causing it to jam. Driving the butt of the gun down hard should eject it. As mentioned, usually caused by cheap ammo.
