Well, walked into the local hardware store today for something else, and walked out with a new rifle.... couldn't hold off until the registry is gone, it was too good a deal!
I've been kicking around the idea for a varmint rifle, had been going over calibers, and keeping in mind I've got a wife that wants to hunt with me but has some shoulder problems and doesn't like the recoil from the 7mm-08 I got her last year- she literally can't shoot more than a dozen rounds before she gives up, and I'm having troubles getting her used to a scope...
And there it was on the shelf: A Weatherby Vanguard in .243 Win, synthetic stock with Monte Carlo cheekpiece, and of all things, OPEN SIGHTS! So I asked to look at it, and lo and behold not only were they irons, but Truglo sights, green at the rear and red at the front. Original price was $629, on sale for $529... so I bought it.
Get it home, ran some rounds through it to get a feel for the action, a couple dry fires to check on the trigger and I'm in love- not broke in but the bolt slides like glass with no wiggle, and the trigger is definitely the lightest and crispest I've ever put finger to.
What I'm trying to find out now is what the hell is this? Weatherbys don't come with irons, period, unless it's custom ordered. The Weatherby website doesn't show it as an option. Sticker on the box claims it's a VGD W/sights, and the tag in the store read ".243 Win, Weatherby Northwoods". Near as I can figure I just bought this rifle with 2 boxes of ammo for less than the USD price on the US website, and Google can't tell me anything about it.
Anyone out there that can fill me in on this at all?
