So I want to build me a "precision" rifle. So I decided to start with the 700 in .223. I shot my friend's and it was sweet. So what should I do next???? I have a scope, it's not great but it will do for now. Any advice??? I am on a budget, lol, so be easy on me. I would also prefer stuff that I can do myself so I can say I did it!!! Thanks.

Decent glass... trigger work.. new stock...

Lots of options for stocks on these guns, some pricey, some affordable... Trigger pull is probably way up there. Both mine are around 8lbs.. I still need to get that toned down a bit. There are guides online on how to do that.

Bedding it would be a good start as well as getting the trigger worked on by a competent gunsmith.

Save up and buy some good glass, your eye's will thank you later.

I wouldn't do the trigger yourself. 40 bucks-ish with a gunsmith. Same with bedding. If you're looking to make your rifle more accurate, those are the two big ones right off the bat (in that order, in my opinion), along with getting a decent scope, as mentioned.

The thing with doing it yourself is those two things are fairly easy to screw up if you don't really know what you're doing, and screw up your gun along with it. Both are cheap mods, so I'd just spend the money. Also, both those things have a little bit of an art to them, best left to someone who's done a truckload of them.

Something you could do yourself that will really help your accuracy (and your wallet) is to learn how to reload. If you're not ready to do that then -for now, just shoot lots (at little targets), save all your brass.

You can add a magazine extender from Armstech LLC.

Around $30

You can add a larger bolt knob, but Smithing might cost $100.
Lots to choose from.

You have a rail, but this one is nice for those people viewing without one:

You can get a rifle cartridge butt stock sleeve:

You can add a nice sling:

good optics, action trued and rebarrel with a quality barrel like Kreiger, tactical style bolt, a Jewel trigger wouldn't hurt the cause and a Manners or McMillan A5 stock.. one thing at a time when you can afford it....

Which 700? Are you reloading? Are you a girl?
Bed the action 1st thing. Tune the trigger. Many will tune up nicely at 2.5 lbs. Save your pennies for some descent glass. The Bushy Elites are extremely good for the money. The rest will depend on trigger time and your ammo. Once you shoot better than your gun, look at a barrel and whatever stock options you prefer.

Order the Brownells catalog then prattle to everyone on the internet about how many aftermarket goodies are available for the Remington. Then buy $500 worth of the aforementioned goodies and spend $500 on smith work to make it behave like an OOB Savage.

start spending money :)

I got the SPS Varmint last year with a cheap scope.
within one month I had:

-started reloading my own Ammo
-purchased a new scope

This year I got the Trigger adjusted by a gunsmith as well as had him do a really really good cleaning (I cleaned it myself but I wanted it done professionally) I am going to go shoot it this weekend and then I am going to have him Glass Bed it (at least the front)

Next? probably a new stock, maybe a new trigger system.

I bought a SPS tactical 223 about 2 months ago. I put on my vx1 leupold 3-9 for the first month. since then I now have a leupold mark 4 4.5-14x40mm LR/t scope and have done some trigger adjustments (from 5.5lbs to about 3.4lbs) still nice and crisp. next for me will be a new stock.

have fun

Glass bed it at the front? Actually that's one place where you don't want any bedding. You should bed the action and let the barrel free float, but hey, do what you want...

Savage isn't going to shoot any better out of the box, and maybe worse. They both usually shoot reasonably well. Beyond that it's just the mac vs. pc, adidas vs. nike debate.

I think what the Smith meant is that he can bed the rear and or front of the action (not the barrel)

he said on the SPS Varmint just the front of the action is necessary.

not real sure what he meant, will talk him in more detail when I get him to do the work, could be me that miss-heard.

Put a decent scope on it so you don't need to upgrade later. Remingtons are easy to bed yourself, set the trigger, then just go shoot the crap out of it. Personally I'd rather spend a couple extra bucks and stay away from the tupperware stocks.
