I bumped my usual warm weather load of 24.5gr Varget up .1 and .2 gr and also tried a few different OAL. I think I found a winner with COAL of 2.410, 24.7 gr Varget lit with a BR-4 primer pushing 80gr Amax at 2860fps -2 degC. The results were similar to 24.5 gr in 20-30 deg weather (five shots into .330). Rifle is a Tikka Varmint .223rem 1:8 twist with a Vortex Crossfire 6-24X50MD. Shot this 5 rd group at 100yd today.:D

5 shots? But why are you measuring just 3 holes... the 2 other ones are at the lower right of the pictures!

The caliper appears to be centered on one hole, but it looks like it needs to be opened a bit to be centered on the other as well.;)

Nice shooting, but the picture really doesn't look like a five shot .256" group. It may very well be a five shot .256" group, but the picture just doesn't look like it.

Very nice group.

I have found that at longer distances in the cold, the BR4's didn't ignite as consistently as I want and got some stringing. I switched to CCI450's and the problems went away.

enjoy a great set up....

I agree the picture is deceiving. The shadow and the grid lines on the target cause something of an illusion. I remeasured today in better light, OD to OD subtract .224 from .476 = .252.;) Not my best group with this rifle, but so far the best with the 80gr Amax. I have one of those pistol grip infrared thermometers and I'm trying to establish some proven data on powder charge vs ambient temp vs chamber temp.

Fired 20rds at the 1000yd gong last month. 7 connected. The other 13 went through the hole in the gong.:pJK This was my first time shooting it past 750yd. I hope my batting averaged improves in the future, but it still made my day.

How much differance does cold make. This will be my first winter shooting lots at distance. Probably will shoot in temps down to about -15 to -20.

Depends on the powder. Some are very temp sensitive so you need to tweak your loads alot.

ALL powders are affected by big changes in temp. Lowering the temp is the same as reducing the energy in the powder. you need more powder to get the same performance/tuning.

Nice shooting I have the same gun..similar results..although I haven't tried anything as heavy as you were..I better find some though.
