Hey guys!

So I just picked up my first 22 LR, a Ruger 10/22 Deluxe. It looks quite nice, although it kinda sucked that Lebaron had raised their price $20 from the price listed in their 2008 magazine.

I have no intention of using this as a 'mod' gun. The barrel and stock will all stay the same.

However, I am interested in modifying the internal components to make the gun run more smoothly, provided that its easy enough for me to do.

I was wondering, does anyone know of the best/cheapest place to buy the parts online, such as the volsq hammer, and whatever else would be best?

I am just looking for something that is basic enough, I don't plan on making this the most accurate 10/22 in Ontario, I just want to give it a longer life, and to increase accuracy/reliability.

I am not very mechanically inclined, so do you think I would be able to install these parts myself?

Anything else I should know about the Ruger 10/22 before I start plinking away?

Also- I am looking for the Steel Lips, particularly the 'smoked' type.
 
First off, congrats...you've made a nice purchase! The 10/22 mags will be around, just chill and wait for 'em (checking the E & E is always a good idea). The usual "first aftermarkets", IMHO, for the 10/22 (aside from hi-caps) would be the VQ extractor, mag-release extension and the bolt buffer (I really don't know if the latter does anything, but "while you're in there", etc...). Anyhow, enjoy!
 
I liked my Ruger 10-22 Deluxe so much I traded it for a 12 Gauge Wingmaster at a gun show in Septemper. Replacement was a Remington 597 HB that IMO is a much nicer gun.

After several attempts at the Ruger .22's, despite no functioning issues, they simply do not fit me in either the standard or deluxe model.
 
To update my question-

Am I able to install the following parts with little mechanical experience and with few tools necessary? I have never actually taken a gun apart before, besides a shotgun which is easy =)

I would like to install these parts:

Volquartsen Ruger 10/22 Auto Bolt Release
Volquartsen Ruger 10/22 Extended Magazine Release
Volquartsen Ruger 10/22 Target Hammer
Volquartsen Ruger 10/22 Bolt Recoil Buffer
Volquartsen Ruger 10/22 Exact Edge Extractor
Volquartsen Ruger 10/22 Target Trigger

Do you think the recoil buffer and target trigger are necessary?

All of those parts are fairly easy to change out. I would also suggest getting a volquartsen extractor. The recoil buffer is good because it will stop metal on metal contact every time you fire the gun. The best place I have found for 10/22 parts is HawkTech Arms in the US. They are cheap and ship the items out fast.

.ruger22.com/ has good info on installing mods, BTW i bought my small parts (same as your picks) from them, no problem.
There are other good info sites for mods, such as rimfirecentral.com.

Found the Rugers very much like the Browning semi auto in that they are just not proportioned for a 6"3" frame and always found myself " scrunching " into the gun.

With my Remington 552 Speedmasters and the 597 HB they actually fit and feel like a rifle and simply - work better for me

Before you go spending a bunch of money on mods make sure it's what you want to keep.

I've put a buffer rod in each of my 10/22's and it made a world of difference.

Why don't you try the TUFFER BUFFER?
Made in Canada and better (and cheaper) than a VQ IMO

I'd vote for hawktech as well - Excellent service to Canada!

I have the same rifle (the "deluxe"), and I love it... now. The factory bolt release crap was the first thing I chucked, as it was driving me over the short distance to wacko. The buffer will make your little rifle SOUND so much better, besides any potential advantage in longevity of the receiver (no more "clank! clank! clank!"). I also replaced the extractor, but the stock trigger is okay for my shooting. I also have a hate on for open sights, and I didn't want to ruin the lines / mass of the cute little carbine with a telescope, so I added the Williams firesight bead and aperture rear sight - To each their own.

Yes, anyone with minor technical aptitude can replace the mechanicals - There are directions for everything on the 'net, if you look around. Just go slowly, READ everything through TWICE BEFORE you start taking things apart, and keep your parts laid out in the order you remove them.

Your question about the difficulty of self-installation? Shouldn't be too hard, except the extractor could be dicey...follow the "everything 10/22+ post stickied on top of this thread, what which extractor you are replacing, and make sure you have adequate space for flying parts...the other "mods" should be pretty much easy to DIY....

I like my "full-size" stock on the 10/22 RR...but I fully understand why most swap-out their stocks.

I love the "fit" of the 552, and I'll say this...Rem makes nice full-size rifles.

+1 for replacing the extractor! A bolt buffer also make a nice change. I've been using some WeaponKraft that I bough a decade ago and they are still going strong.

A tip when changing the extractor is to do it inside of a plastic bag. When I changed mine out the extractor plunger went flying and took me 2 hours to find it.
 
Hey guys,

So I took out the 10/22 today to do some squirrel hunting.. I saw a few squirrels but they spooked before I could get a good shot at them.. After a while I just decided to take some pop cans out and I went at em with the Ruger =) Oh man is that ever alot of fun.. Never fired a semi-auto before besides my friends Cooey which jammed on every 3rd shot.

I only had one bullet not fire, I fired probably 200 total.
