I bought my Tikka T3 Varmint Stainless in 308 last week from P&D. I borrowed the Elite 3200 from my father in law, if I like it I'll buy it, if not I'll get something higher end. For now I just can't wait to get out and sight it in this Sunday. :D

Nice start!

You'll quickly learn that scope will not be enough. If you're on a budget try the Bushnell 3200 fixed 10 power. Its just under $300 last time I checked but it has target turretts and that's something you'll need once you really get into shooting at a distance.

However, if you only plan on shooting at one distance then it'll be fine... until you get the itch to reach out and touch something!

Have fun!

A 3200 5-15 Tactical is a good glass for the money. Actually any of the Bushy elites are very nice. The 3-9 is really great, but only for hunting, bush guns IMO. I love mine, killed many deers, its on my CZ 452 now, killen gophers.

Just another option for you. If you don't like that elite I have 5 of them and they are good for the money but I find my Nikon Buckmaster 6-18x40 that came with sun shade and target knobs a better deal. Click values are good for the price range and I find the glass slightly better in it. Oh and I got my buckmaster from a place that had them on sale a while back for 299.99. I also have the new Leupold VX-3 scope and for hunting situations I find it no better than the elite 3200's a little better but not 3x the price better.

I won't preach glass because you've already got some good recommendations. What I'll suggest is that you take the rifle out and test it with some 168 gr Federal Gold Medal Match ammo. Seems that it gives the best results for most people.

As an aside, do you mind telling me where you got the rings (they look like Sako rings, am I right?) and what you had to give for them?

The rings are the Tikka Optiloks, I got the medium height so I could go to a 50mm scope later on, plus I like a scope that sits a little bit higher. They were pricey, I think $80ish for the rings and $90ish for the bases from WSS in Edmonton.

Thanks for the recomendations on the ammo. That was my next question.

I've had my eye on this rifle since I mailed in my PAL application in November. Sure felt good to finally get something I've been wanting for so long.

I attended an outdoors show at tradex in vancouver recently and a unamed guest speaker had alot to say about why you should stay away from nikon scopes(just their scopes), and after hearing what he said and comparing the optics to an elite 4200 i would have to agree.. I have a friend that purchased a nikon scope and ended up selling it pretty quick to buy a leupold. I would be careful about buying a nikon scope, at least untill you have compared it to a similar bushnell elite. The bushnells seem to be a great option untill you have the money to buy something above 1000.00... I have the tactical 5-15 on one rifle and have been pretty happy with it.

In-Ze

We have a sponsor on this site, Ian Robertson (Robertson Composites) and he has some stocks for that rifle that are outrageously cool. I know you have a whole list of things you'd like to get, but keep that in mind if it comes time to make-over that rifle.

I am quite certain the barrel on that gun will be more than adequate enough for leaarning how to shoot well. One last piece of advice, is nobody ever regretted buying the best optics thay could afford (or not!). they last a lifetime and can be used on multiple rifles, but cheap optics are hard to use on bright days and they have reticles so large as to obliterate the "bullseye" on many targets.

You have laid out a big handful of pesos for that rifle, but a premium scope wold be the crown jewel. Resist the temptation to buy "good enough".

Have fun and post the range reports when you've test driven it!

Good advice best to look through them. I think my nikon is better than my 5 elites (but Iam happy with them for the money) I paid top dollar for the new leupold VX-3 when they first came out and I have to say didn't see what the fuss is about. I wish I would have tried ziess instead. every eye is different so best just to try them out.

Also I agree with obtunded buy the best you can afford even if it means waiting a month for another paycheque I wish I did and I wouldn't be buying twice as I replace these.
