OK, I am back from a week of hunting (which went well). I picked up my SKS @ the post office the day I left. Opened it at hunting camp, was surprised that there was hardly any cosmoline, was more like a heavy oil, after all yer stories I was expecting to see it drippin in cosmoline. I took apart everything possible and dunked in in a big bucket full of boiling water. Then I sprayed all the pieces with Rem. gun cleaner (aerosol) Everything came out super clean and took only an hour. I only had to wipe the stock with a cloth to get off any residue. The rifle is unissued so its in great shape, except for two small spots on the stock, all is in great cond. So I bought some ammo from a local shop(non corrisive factory) and fired 5 shots, no problem. After that every 2 or 3 shots got ripped in half, leaving the shell lodged in the barrel. The shell would seperate about one quarter inch above the rim of the shell. As you could imagine I was pretty pee'd off. Has anyone every experienced this ??? I am hoping its just the ammo I used and not the rifle.

never seen that! Commercial brass cased ammo? Clean and inspect you chamber for irregularities, use a dental pick or something similar to feel for and problems with the machining. Chinese gun I assume? Try some steel cased surplus stuff, see if it gives any problems. FWIW
Good luck

Is the barrel pinned or threaded? Carefully inspect where the barrel is attached to the receiver. Does it look like the barrel is wiggling forward out of the receiver under firing stresses?

You might have got one of the POS thrown together from parts cheapo chicom SKS's that Lever imported last year.

Frankly, this seems likely in which case it IS the rifle. I'd call SIR. If they're peddling the Lever rifles, your woes won't be the only ones they've heard recently. ;)

Ripping brass...

These "increasing headspace series" rifles were spotted not by Lever but by their customers because it became evident only on firing, so be careful and look at the junction of the barrel and the receiver; if there's a bright mark showing, it could be that the barrel is going forward and increasing headspace by the same token.
Another cause of brass ripping is a rough chamber. Check if there is light rust in the chamber or something causing roughness. On SKSes, the barrels are chromed but the chambers aren't.
If the chamber is not mirror-like, you could try polishing it with some 000 steel wool and motor oil at the end of a small split wooden dowel spun with an electric drill.
Go easy and look often.
Good luck!

It is a threaded barrel. I used shells from "Lellier&Bellot" I've never actually heard of this company, but the box says they are made in Czech republic. www.sellier-bellot.cz . As for checking the receiver, I am not to experienced to actually see if there is a problem. The only thing I notice is there is a bit of play in the bolt when it is closed. The receiver, and receiver cover, bolt assembly, bolt carrier all have matching numbers, except the receiver has two extra digits in front. Only the trigger assembly has a diff. number, and I am not sure if there are any other numbers to look for.

The play in the bolt is normal.
You really need to look at where the barrel meets the receiver. Like Pépé said, if you notcie shiny space i.e. the barrel is inching it's way out of the receiver... then houston you have a problem and SIR will likely have to take the rifle back.

Does not look like there is any seperation going on. I showed a buddy of mine the shell and he thought the brass looked awefull thin. I am goin to go try a box of remington or Federal next week end and hope it works. Be a shame since its in such nice shape to have to send it back.

Try some milsurp issued ammo.

And also give the chamber a light polish with motor oil, and 000 steel wool as PerversPépère mentioned.

The s/n on the Lever Arms abortions started with 04 and had norinco markings. Norinco took a threaded receiver and added a pinned barrel by way of trunion(sp). They pinned the barrel to this threaded trunion and it wasn't holding up under firing conditions. I would have a smith look at it before firing it again.

Man, I was really hoping you would all tell me it was the ammo. I hate to pay a gunsmith to ck. it out only to find out I have to send it back, plus I only have 30 days to decide if i need to send it back. You wouldn't happen to live any where near Chateauguay P.Q would you P.P, cause sounds like you would have a bit of experience in looking at my problem first hand.

Here is a pic of the casing...hope the pic woks

From the picture I would say that you're getting extreme case stretch from grossly excessive headspace. Either the chamber was reamed way too deep, the barrel wasn't properly fitted or the barrel is working out of the receiver.

That's pretty funny.....what exactly would they be inspecting it for other than the serial number? The guys behind the counter and in the mail order part are not exactly 'smiths, although some may, in their own little minds, think they know it all...

But my understanding was they should have some technicians working in the firearms department as I talked to some of them over the phone before.

Not likely.....there are no 'smiths or techs to the best of my knowledge working there.....like I said, they like to talk a big talk......

Well...me thinks S.I.R will be getting this rifle back, not sure I wanna spend any money on it to fix it, to bad though, the rifle looked great, never had been fired it looks like. Not sure if I want to trust them to get a replacment or just get a refund.
