Only took about 5 days to ship from Frontier... excellent service.

The gun is way better than I expected. Clean and tight. No rough surfaces or anything that makes me doubt the quality inside or out. I LOVE how it feels on my shoulder... fits tight and the adjustable stock let me position it exactly where I want it.

It has a metal buffer tube, which is nice. I thought it might be plastic like the ones that come with the Tapco stocks for an SKS. I don't know if its commercial or Milspec though. The one on my shotgun was listed as Milspec but is actually smaller than the one that came on my VZ... I thought Milspec was supposed to be bigger in diameter? Either way, they are not interchangeable so one is commercial and one is mil spec. Just gotta figure out which is which.

In the box were the 2 magazines, sling, cleaning kit and DVD. Didnt open the cleaning kit to check it out yet, but the sling is nice. I wont use it. Ill be using another sling I have. Still, its a nice sling. Mags feel cheap to me. Im sure they aren't and I'm sure they'll be fine but compared to how the gun feels the mags have a tinny, cheap, stamped steel feel (because they are stamped steel). They fit great in the gun though. I can definitely see why an extended mag release is a necessity and I can't wait for the tactical bolt release to come back in stock somewhere. I want that too.

I just bought the BCtactical fore end for it. I wanted a rail for an optic and I read that the front grip can get hot so the BCtactical fore end seemed like, while expensive, it would solve both problems AND look cool.

Otherwise, I don't see anything else I need to change. Other than getting the inside dirty with a few hundred corrosive rounds this afternoon. Thats gotta happen.

Just thought id post up my initial impressions. Ill get a pic or two up later tonight.

I had to do alot of weighing between the 2. At the end of the day, I have an SKS to fill my Milsurp needs. I wanted a gun that was finished as well as the best of todays rifles. From what I understand they both function nearly exactly the same, the VZ just costs more and has a nicer finish overall. I don't see how you can loose either way.

Congrats on your new VZ!

The mil-spec buffer tube or receiver extension I think it's called on an AR
is smaller at 1.14" in diameter and the commercial is 1.17"
Our vz58's come with commercial in case you're wanting to upgrade the M4 stock it comes with.

Found this on an AR forum:
Commercial are made from extruded 6061 aluminum (cheap MilSpec "sized" receiver extensions are also Commercial 6061), vs. true MilSpec made from extruded 7075.
Translates to breaking strength of 45 vs. 75 lbs.

Would only matter if you're going to be hitting anything with it I guess.

I found you just can't stop at one.. I started with the NR 858, then the 11.5" Vz. Recently I tried a friends 7.5" VZ... now I gotta have that too!

These rifles are fun, reliable and cheap to shoot. They are built like a tank and will run forever! Lots of accesories for them now too so that helps you personalize your iron any way you want. Enjoy!

Shot the gun today. Man, I really like it. It shoots so much nicer than my SKS, not quite as nice as my mini-30 but it looks so much cooler... which makes it FEEL better overall.

I can't believe how these mags are pinned though. Just a tiny rivet and it stops you from being able to take them apart to clean. Seems pointless to me.

I put about 100 rounds through the gun tonight, ill be taking it all apart to clean it (corrosive ammo) before bed. I love how simple it is to take apart. No screws or anything. Ill get a pic up tonight before bed. Overall, one of my better purchases and one that will be staying with me for a LONG time. If my wife and daughter hadn't bought me my SKS for fathers day, id probably sell it... but really, it was only $75 and it has some meaning. So ill just keep it around. I agree though, its not going to see much action now.

Order a BCtactical front grip for this baby and I got a side rail and optic mount from zahals... it appears to be the stock CSA side rail that will use the factory drilled and tapped holes that are already in the receiver. I didnt want to drill anything. So hopefully this rail I bought is the right one. Wasn't cheap, but it should look factory.

Im also in the process of ordering the tactical bolt release and ambidextrous mag release from zahals also. I can't find both anywhere... and I can't find the bolt release anywhere even on its own. So this seems like the best option. These aren't cheap either. But once I get them, the gun should be setup just the way I've been imagining it to be setup.
