I just got back today from a snowshoe hare hunt I took my brother on. His kids are at the high maintenance age, 2 years and 7 months, and he works like crazy so he just doesn't get time for himself really. Decided I wanted to go after the white fluffy guys, we went into the cascade recreation area just above manning park. Used a forestry site and made an igloo around a table instead of tenting as it just so happened the snow was suitable, I find the snow's usually too soft in the Cascade Mountains to cut blocks. Oddly, I actually prefer the igloo to tenting now as there's no noise in there it's almost perfectly sound insulated, slept til 10am despite ugly weather, and I'm usually an early bird camping. Aside from the time it takes to build it was great, 10º warmer inside than out. It's still a novelty for me so I enjoyed it, a couple more and it'd be work. Next one I'll have to try a self supporting dome, cheated on this one.

Alas, as for rabbit, we were skunked. Found tracks and rabbit runs, but didn't have any snare wire and none passed under our watch. Just the same it was a heck of a break from the rat race.

Thanks alot!! Now yah got me wanting to go friggin' winter camping and rabbit hunting! I have a 2 year old daughter, and my wife is ready to have our 2nd one any time now! I thought for sure we would have been at the hospital this weekend! I just look forward to taking the family out winter camping, hunting, ice fishing etc. Hope you enjoy many more trips with your brother Ardent! Cheers!:D
 
Yea it made me appreciate winter a lot more, although I'd been winter camping before, it kind of opened up new horizons, as to be honest I liked this more than summer camping, there's nobody out there this time of year, and the frozen rivers and the mountains are beautiful. Easy to track this time of year too. ;)
 
Well, not hunting and not much for snow...but a couple years ago my son and I did a survival camp for 3 days. We had very little food, no water and no matches or lighter. My boy wanted to try to make a shelter, start a fire and learn how to get "unlost". We set out with a compass and a hatchet and some hot dogs and oatmeal! Heres a pic after walking 3 hours into the bush!

We took out a flint (canadian tire), a bow and stick ( I made) and a lens off a camaera. My boy tried all three but the flint did the job. Only took him a 1/2 hour! :rolleyes: I just handed him the stuff and let him do it all (with a little guidance). Only way he's going to learn is by doing it! He was 9 when we did it in the pic, been doing it every winter since!
 
cool pics but ardent that is some shotty masonry its called a level people! haha just kidding

their is a website called snipercountry.com and it has a ton of survival information on it and it has many shelter making tips. its at the bottom i think its called training. its got some useful tips its definatly worth a read.

i will hopefully be doing a little bit of winter camping this fall but finding the time is hard.
