Okay, I didn't really get to play with them, but I did get to look them over and pick them up today at the Burnaby RCMP open house.

From the looks of it they only secured the M16 by the trigger guard, meaning it would only take a small punch to release the trigger guard detent and walk away with the gun.

Tut tut tut RCMP, someone should charge them with unsafe storage, of a prohib no less...

That's not even close to the proper storage method... Locking it to the desk no bolt removed no trigger lock no locked case.... tsk tsk... Now why do the police need that kind of firepower when the average Joe can't?

and i assume it would be a simple matter of bringing a loaded mag for the ar and your all set to take hostages.

The ERT guy was standing right there, with the 9mm and 5.56 mags tucked in his belt. My 3 year old was standing on the table, getting his pic taken with the ERT guy, and idly playing with the AR mag.

Edit: here's the pic

Big surprise... the government doesn't hold people authorized to use firearms in the course of their duties to the same standard as the civilian world.... In other news, the sun will rise in the East tomorrow.

I'm pretty sure the lock is there to prevent someone to take the firearm and take to daddy/mommy at the food stand on the other side of the place, not steal it. Keep in mind that the people going there (or in majority) have few knowledge on firearms and don't even know what a trigger guard detent is.

For the M16A1, maybe they had an M16 before, kept the lower and put news parts, because it looks a whole lot more like an M4/C8....

Because the firearms arent being stored genius.

You goto gun stores and do they have trigger locks and etc on their restricted firearms? Nope. Just because its the "evil police" you think you're smart by making dumb comments. Get a life.

Now where does he say "evil Police"? Is he really the one who is making dumb, lifeless comments here? I don't think anyone is comparing a display with storage, it's just jealous idle chatter. It is always possible to steal kit from a display but even if they weren't cable locked getting away with it is a another matter.

Now as far as "do the police need that kind of firepower" there is fine line between police/paramilitary/military at some point the police activities fall into paramilitary. I do not want Canada to have paramilitary forces. I find that Bison :sok2in the back much more disconcerting then the M16, the role of SWAT/ERT/ETF etc. is a slippery slope...

Police don't need that "firepower" for the "average Joe". They need it for the drug dealers and gang bangers carrying ak47s and tec9s being smuggled up from the states. When police officers are not busy 'infringing on your rights', they are actually out there trying to arrest criminals, believe it or not.

Maybe services should stop nicely trying to show members of the public their kit, as was the case here. It's one less thing for people to complain about.

Rant concluded!

News flash. Police have always been paramilitary from the start. Better go and hide.

Oh no??

There is no "M16A1" in these pictures. Rollmarks? Pics or it didn't happen.

Its a public affairs display. The military does it the same way. The firearms are always under constant surveillance.

They are not in storage, or transport...they would be considered "in use". Regardless, the military and the police are not subject to the provisions of the firearms act. So any comment to the contrary is a waste of bandwidth. Some of you people need to get a clue.

Cool guns. The suppressed MP5 would be fun to play with.

I didn't take a pic of the rollmarks. But if I did, it would have looked like this:

Not sure how you someone could conclude "There is no "M16A1" in these pictures" without being there.

Strange. Again, not trying to hijack your post, I am just very curious about this.

That is so odd that an M-4 style rifle would be marked as an A1. I'm sure there is something I don't know when it comes to manufacturing.

I think we can all agree, nobody would look at that gun and say it's an M-16A1. To me this is an M-16A1.

I noticed the gun in your photo had an LMT upper and Colt lower. Cops using frankenguns?

Very common to see agencies upgrade older guns, the RCMP did upgrade older guns with new uppers & components - in the US agencies received surplus M16's from the government and many had new uppers installed...
