Had to finish up a job on Saturday morning, wanted to be at the auction early to peruse the offerings!! Oh well, job comes first right? No job no guns!!! So I get there finally and get my bidder number and am trying to work my way closer to the action, I'm short and had a hard time finding a good spot to see. Dang there are a lot of tall gunnuts!!! Some pretty wide ones to!. Anyway I'm listening to the auctioneer, and I quote " come on guys she's a nice 03 in .308, a nice sporterised, hunting gun!!! "He was trying to get one more bid, I didn't have an 03 and I didn't have a.308, from 20 feet away she looked purdy, gooood, besides the bid did seem low, and almost like two for one,so I bid!!!!! BANG, down came the gavel!!!!! WOW that was easy. Away she went to the back room for payment, paperwork, and pickup, I didn't want to miss any more bargins, so I stayed till they ran out of guns and started on the accessories, just letting the anticipation build and build!!! I paid, did paperwork, paid again and went over to pick her up AT LAST. So they put it in a sock for me and away i went. Managed to drive all the way home without stopping in a secluded place and undressing her Ha Ha! So I get her out of the sock, first thing I noticed is weaver scope bases, on the top of the reciever, OK, that's good,I hope. Next i see 3 D&T holes on the left side of the reciever?? Well that's kinda overkill, !!! Starting to get concerned, have read about the problem some 03 reciever have!!!!!??? OH, CHIT,!!!! Roll her over, and DAM!!!! THERE ARE 3 MORE,D&T HOLES IN THE RIGHT SIDE. CHIT,CHIT CHIT. This ain't looking too good!! Did I just spend my hard earned money on a wall hanger? Maybe make a neat floor lamp?? But wait it's gets better?? I mean WORSE, IT'S CHAMBERED IN .308 ALLRIGHT.!!!! .308 Norma MAGNUM!!!!!!!!!!! IS THIS THING EVEN SAFE TO SHOOT EVEN WITH REDUCED LOADS?? HELP, HELP HELP

1903 Springfields can be safely chambered in 308 Norma Mag - apparently was nearly as commonly done as with Model of 1917 Enfield's. It's all in the "who did the work" and "what did he know to do and not to do". As per Roy Dunlap, a bolt action rifle could be made from lead, from behind the front receiver ring and the front locking lugs on the bolt, to the back of the tang, and not affect its ability to hold the pressure. Everything locks up in that front ring. So, extra holes on the sides and the rear bridge aren't going to change its ability to take pressure of the cartridge. I can't explain all you've described, but I believe it was common to D&T two holes on right side of bridge, just ahead of the bolt, for a receiver aperture sight. Then, three holes along the left side rail would be for a scope side mount of some sort, like by Griffin & Howe. There may be disparaging comments about the weaver bases, but they work well, and usually allow the use of the iron sights,if the scope and rings are removed.

Waiting on team membership, should go through tomorrow (24 hrs.) Then this cmputertard, will attempt pics? Never done it befor, wish me luck. And THANKS

ah auction fun...

like the 303 I bought cheap only to find out the barrel was bent, or the EAL that was D&T for a scope a little deep like right into the chamber

I like auctions.....

So after I bought this gun and found it to be a MAGNUM!!! it scared me, so she went to the back of the safe!! Now thanks to your encouraging words I'll get some brass and dies and start low, and try her out. What do you think came first, the aperture on the right, followed by the left side scope base, and finally the top mount??? I'm thinking the P.o. Started with apeture, didn't like it or eyes got old, like me, then went to left side mount that for whatever reason didn't work? And finally to good old solid top mount. What are your thoughts? Never really know for sure huh!! Thanks
