I am a surveyor by trade. This week I was doing an oil field related survey on a ranchers land. We got to chatting about hunting, then to rifles, then to long distance percision shooting. H mentioned he had what he called a flat 10 hectare pasture field against the river that he said would probably fit my needs.
I had the GPS set up already, so we picked a suitable fireing point, and I proceeded to percisely measure out 100 yard increments, and stake them. I ended up with an isolated corridor 50m wide, and 1200m long! Here is the sweet part, across the 1200m, the ground elevation differs by only 46 cm!
The new "range" runs parallel to the river on the left, with mature poplar and birch as a buffer, and on the right is side slope climbing 120m in elevation. The Range lies from the nw to se, for all intents and purposes the same direction as the prevailing winds! The butt of the range is just prior to a bend in the river, so I have another 600m if I want the target to climb in elevation, and then flat hill side with heavy poplar and bush for a back stop! Its only 1/2 hour from where I live. I cant wait to put it to use. :D

That sounds like a fantastic place to shoot. I'm still waiting to get lucky enough to find a piece of land like that to shoot on. My 200 yard membership range is feeling short. I think that fellow deserves a really nice bottle of rye/rum/scotch.

Are you shooting towards the se or the north west , the reason I ask is the sun goes from east to west and I have shot at some ranges that are not so great in the afternoon because of the sun in your eyes.

I will be shooting from the nw. Sweet paet is the 120m hill on the southish side of me, I'm in the bottom, this time of year (3 days ago!) there was no direct sun after 2:00PM, I imagine in the summer/fall from 3 or 3:30 the sun will be perpindicular to the shooting line, and after work, kinda over my shoulder/ behind me.

Yes a bottle of whisky has been suggested and accepted.

He phoned me again today, and asked if I had anything bigger than a .308, as that wouldn't get to 1000m. :D Can't wait to show him the difference! :)

If he ever wants to fire a 50cal let me know. I love seeing their smiles after pulling the trigger!
