Governor General's Body Guard......

Hello to all,

I have a rifle scabbard (saddle) that is stamped G.G.B.G.. I presume that it was issued to the Governor General's Body Guards. I'd like to know what kind of rifle it was made for and if I am right about the acronym. There is also 1897, could be a date or a model.
A Winchester carbine fits in but it wasn't made for it!
