gp100 vs 686/redhawk vs model 29

kbg77, you are dealing with a Ruger 357 mag D/A revolver vs a S&W 357 Mag L frame vs a S&W 44 mag N Frame revolver. This is truly mixing apples and oranges. Do I prefer a Ruger 357 mag D/A revolver to a S&W 357 Mag L frame? In my case the answer is yes. If you ask do I prefer a Ruger 357 mag D/A revolver to a S&W 44 mag N Frame revolver? My answer is yes but if you offer me a S&W 357 mag N Frame revolver or a Ruger 357 mag D/A I will take the S&W 357 mag N Frame revolver. Regards, Richard :D

hey richard, basically curious as to people's opinions regarding ruger 357 vs smith 357 and ruger vs smith 44 revolvers. never really noticed the redhawk before and was curious how it stacked up against the famous model 29.

cheers

went to the local shop today, really like the feel of the gp 100, prefer it to the smith. hopefully i will run into someone with a redhawk so i can get a feel for that one too.

make it a fair fight- compare the redhawk with the hogue grip, not the factory- there's a big difference- the super redhawk is like your gp100 but scaled up to fit the larger series cartridges- but the real proof is in the shooting

I know zero about Ruger D/A 44 Mag revolvers but I do love my Ruger 44 Mag Super BlackHawk. If I am going to shoot a lot of 44 Mag rounds it is the handgun I pick up. Regards, Richard :D

Generally speaking.
The Rugers take abuse.I have never had to have any of my Ruger revovers
in for Tuning or timing work. The Smith do need to go in occasionally( I use to shoot
alot both reduced loads and full power service loads) the Smiths have the quickest
trigger return time so you can shoot faster.if thats important? Also Smiths have
more aftermarket parts. Smiths are much more ###y.

Regards

I love rugers but I would have to go with the Smiths on both, due to looks.Quality is the same(BOTH EXCELLENT!!) If I could I would buy all!!

S&W: Forged and machined frame. Lifetime warrantee.
Ruger: Investment cast and polished frame, no official warranty though Ruger will generally try to fix their guns most of the time.

I've had and liked both, but I still have S&W's if that means anything...

Both are a good quality piece but the Smiths can be made as strong AND be less "meaty" due to the superiority of the strength of forged and heat treated parts over investment castings which require a higher factor of safety due to the possibility of casting inclusions.

My gunsmith prefers to own and work on the Smiths over the Rugers and he feels S&W has a superior lock design if a gunsmith;s opinion counts for anything...???

This is my S&W M29-3 and I am here to tell you this isn' a revolver that you want to shoot hot loads in all afternoon. The reason is with hot loads these things kick!

For long sessions at the range either a Ruger BlackHawk 45 Colt or Super BlackHawk 44 Mag. is a better choice.
