O.K. guys 'n' gals....

I have a sort of a dilemma...
I have a choice between a GPS (considering Rhino 530HCx or 60CSx) or a rangefinder. GPSCcity.ca has rebates on the Rhino, and what looks like a decent price on the 60.
I seen the sale Cabelas is having (US) on the Elite w/ARC. I may be able to throw in some extra for the family to get a Lecia. Cameralandny has Lecias for 590ish for refurbished, and 700 for new...WOW...
Now, which do I get, rangefinder or GPS?!

Thanks for your help,
LeRoy

Do you fish?? I went through the same problem. I can use the gps for fishing, load street guide in it, I have topo canada for it. I use the rangefinder a few times during hunting season, that's it. When I looked at it this way, it was a no brainer for me. I bought a garmin gps 76csx from gps central. great service, shipped the same day. Oh look at gps central. they are located in calgary

You will fined the GPS will be the most use peace you have. I also use my Garman a lot. Mine is a 296 for flight, road, mareine and I can still carry it in my fanny pack hunting. We are in the mountains and some cut blocks once replanted can tun a person around. o for safty we waypoint the truck and then go hunt. works every time.

GPS. Rangefiners are nice to have, but a GPS is a NEED to have.

You can use your GPS after the shot by plotting a route from where you pulled the trigger, to where the animal was standing. I only use my rangefinder for archery.

Thanks guys!
I don't fish enough, but hope to remedy that. What made my choice for the GPS was, I can use it to plot the area for shot distances before hunting season.
Now to figure out which GPS.....

I bought a 60csx from GPScentral and really like it.
The Rinos look good but IMHO the cost of the unit is equal to a GPS, a set of GMRS handhelds and a whack of hunting gear!!!

My hunting buddy and I have the Rino 120s and find that they work quite well. Depending on how you like to hunt, they can be really handy. They have a feature called peer to peer positioning, which shows where your partner is on your GPS screen. It's a useful feature at times because we sometimes split up and are out of sight of each other, so it's good to know where each other is.

Another vote for GPS. I have both but if I was trying to decide which to get first I'm get the GPS. How far away from something is less critical than "where the hell am I?"

I never got lost before I owned a GPS! I agree it is a great tool, but my rangefinder has been a definate asset to me and no doubt givin me success on hunts because of it.

Buy a paper map, compass and a rangefinder!

As already suggested, go with the GPS first. But you don't need a fancy model like the Rhino. I have an Etrex HCX that does everything I want it to. The only downside is that I needed to buy the memory card separately, but it works great. It stores more waypoints than I could ever want to plot, and even without a map, navigation is beyond simple. I also have a Bushnell Elite 1500 with ARC, it cost about $300 when I bought it, and it works just as good as the leica.

I suggest buying an Etrex for about $150.00, and a Bushnell Elite 1000 w/ARC, for about $250-300. Those 2 will do all the global positioning & range finding that you need, and cost less than a used Leica combined

That's my $.02

Boy, you fellas sure know how to help make it easier for a person to make a choice......NOT! lol
I think I'll have to make a trip to the city and find a place to play with them.

Thanks again,
LeRoy

The rhino eats batteries when used with the radio. I prefer a seperate radio to my GPS unit. I have the Garmin Summit colour model and love it for the digital compas, elivation and mapping capabilities. It has proven to be extremely accurate and a life saver when travelling in heavy fog or snow fall. As for the range finder, I have a Bushnell Elite w/o the Arc and use it almost weekly when ground hawg hunting. I also use it deer hunting over agricultural fields with the rifles and muzzle loaders later in December. They are a great tool, but as said before they aren't gonna potentially save your life or make tracking a wounded deer any easier.
