As for handheld, I like new technology. But I also like tested technology and simplicity in a gps due to the conditions I use it in. Which is a lot, and varied (I'm an exploration geologist). I use a Garmin 76CSX. It has most of the features found on newer units, but is burly as hell and I can use it with gloves on (no touch screen). Not too fancy, a little bulky for some folks. If you can't tell, I'm recommending it...
I also really like the ease of use of Garmin's Mapsource software for the computer. I have generated some great maps using my tracks and waypoints.
Cheers.
