I rather pull the firearm out of battery that way it can't fire and just jam a finger in it and hang on for dear life...
if I'm holding a gun pointed at somebodies face (and if I am dead serious about pointing it at his face) I can tell you that he won't have time to grab my gun, there'll be a hole in his head if he moves even an eyebrow. aside from that it really isn't rocket science that preventing the slide from racking will keep it from re-loading. if the spent case didn't eject, well that kind of tells the story.

You can grab a revolver cylinder with the same effect, although the cylinder is shorter than the slide and requires more accuracy.
Same principle for long guns, except non-reciprocating chargers.
