So I have recently aquired my Grandfathers Lee, and in all honesty I'm not too sure what exactly I have..other than the obvious .303 Sporterized Enfield.
I was hoping some of you could educate me on this particular rifle. ANYTHING is helpful and appreciated.
Butt socket tells the story. A Mk. III* rifle made in 1918.
Sold off surplus and commercially sported in the UK for resale on the sporting goods market, most likely in the '60s.

Year is straight forward. S(HT)LE III ...the "HT" Im sure I can findthe meaning of easily
As for the resto part...as much as Id like a full wood version, just the fact is was grandads rifle, I'll probably leave it
There seems to be so many missing pieces anyways
GR: built during the reign of King George by British Small Arms Co. (a public corporation). The rest just is abbreviation for Short Magazine Lee Enfield with the III* indicating it conformed to the slightly simplified version that emerged during the Great War. Good decision not to "restore" it as it costs a lot to do so and installing the forend properly is not straight-forward. Enjoy it for what it likely meant to your Grandfather.
Like milsurpo said it was proofed during the reign of HRH King George and all British firearms produced during his reign will be marked the same, that's why anything proofed during HRH Queen Elizabeth's reign has EIIR for Elizabeth II Regina.
