Yes it is sporterized, but one of the nicer jobs I've seen. I know smutz about the rifle, other than Grandpa bought it off the shelf and used it lots. He loved this rifle. I took it apart and cleaned her good last night and popped some pics. If you can throw me any knowledge about the rifle including who sporterized it, that would be great.
The thing I like the most about this rig is the stock has zero play. Nice and tight. And if anyone knows where I can get a peep setup or a new elevation ramp for the rear sight, please tell me. I need one. Cause this thing fits me too well not to shoot some critters with it.
Now to peruse:

Globe firearms was an Ottawa company. Did all sorts of things to all sorts of military guns. That's what makes the survivors rare today.
Nice family heirloom however.

Well - Sad thing is, the rifle was originally equipped with a peep. Someone saw fit to mill it off with the rear receiver bridge. It also had been drilled and tapped for a scope mount, but the rear mounts also were ground away.
Perhaps your Grand dad arranged to have the buckhorn sight installed, and the grinding - this mimicks the PH conversions of the day. You might want to just buy another sporter complete with peep sight - it'll cost you about the same.

Arguably open sights are better for lower light levels, ie. dawn and dusk when the deer are most active, which may explain the choices made previously. It looks as the rifle has already been tapped for a scope, that may be worth looking into, but I doubt I'd be looking into putting a peep on it myself.

Parker Hale make a peep sight that attaches on the existing screws, they are available on evil bay regularly ,be prepared to pay more than your rifle is worth for it.

That must have been done in a garage or basement. Could be cleaned up somewhat if you're good with files.

I find the sporterization done to this rifle... interesting, and a bit scary somehow.

I would leave it as is... I doubt there's anything that could significantly improve it in my opinion.
