I've heard a few times about "greasing the lugs" on a bolt gun. Where exactly, and how much grease should be applied on bolt action rifles?

A little grease on the bearing surfaces of the locking lugs and the cocking piece cam area in the end of the bolt.

Actually, the receivers should be designed to tolerate complete repeated friction free firings of the loaded case. Modern actions should not be impacted by the additional thrust of the case since this would have been taken into account in the design. I would be more inclined to agree with the warning on early production rifles.

It is obvious to most, I'm sure, that lubrication goes hand in hand with cleanliness. So locking lugs and recesses are cleaned prior to lubrication.
FWIW, I have seen more actions damaged from a lack of lubrication than I have from inadvertant chamber lube issues.
Actions which were case hardened are less likely to be seriously damaged by a lack of lubrication than newer alloy actions. Regards, Bill.
