Well as luck would have it a new friend of mine invited me out to his gopher patch from last year, so we went to check it out and seems the field had since been worked so we had to do spme scouting for a new place. Met a farmer on the road and asked him if he knew where there were any gophers?
He says I have lots and takes us to his place. 2 separate fields both last years stubble back well away from any neighbors and says we can use any guns we want, but the usual don't shoot any cows. So we get permission to come back the next day and have at er.
I really hadn't had a good chance to get into some gopher action with my fairly new 19 Calhoon so it was my first gun for shooting. My partner had a brand new Meister grade Annie in hornet and he had never shot gophers with a center fire rifle. Well we had a ball, lots of gopher aerobatics.
Next gun for me was my Classic mannlicher in 222, with a great shooting 40gr Vmax load also never out to the gopher patch.
My winger had a new to him CZ 511 semi auto which performed as advertised.
Our late afternoon high light came with 2 magpies at over 100 yards with his CZ and my CZ full stock. He fired 3 to walk it in with the 3rd being deadly and I just took the hold over info and made it happen with one round. On our way home we happened to see 3 golden eagles feeding on the carnage from the first field a mother and 2 two year old birds. a rare sight for me.
We saw very few pups so these fields should be very active again next week some time, can't wait. FS
