great M14 story here....

I don't think I'd want to carry a big awkward 4.5-14x scope with me if I was on the front line. Leave the sniping to the snipers.

I'd certainly prefer it over an m16a2 without a front sight!

I'd take the 7.62 any day, with the size of the '14' I don't know if the scope is really an issue in itself even if it is the 4.5 -14 x 50. The '14' is issued as DMR (Designated Marksmen) not as an M25 :sniper: (sniper).....there is a difference as the DMR is meant to deal with all the issues that the M16 :ar15: platform isn't able to in the mid range engagements.....which from what I hear and read happens a lot.

For all those that have doubted me when I've told about the odd jamming issue with the Arms #18.....here it is mentioned again. Given your situation this could be a life threatening issue.

Well since I don't have any personal experience to base my opinion, just what I have been reading from the experiences of people that have been doing their jobs in the mid-east and some friends in the US that have spent time there (in every case that's been more than they wanted) I'd define mid range or the DMR's job without #'s but as anything that is beyond the real life effective ability of the the 5.56 to drop a clothed combatant in winter time. The DMR is also mobile with the squad which might not be the case of the Scout Sniper.

Is that an OK answer ?

Ok, this DMR notation was new to me so I had to look it up in the M16 marksmanship manual I just got (yay!)

SQUAD DESIGNATED MARKSMAN PROGRAM
The SDM program will provide the squad with a designated marksman that has been trained to engage targets from 300 to 500 meters. He will operate and maneuver as a rifleman, but will have the added responsibility of engaging targets with effective, well-aimed fires out to 500 meters. He can also be used to help direct the fires of other squad members into enemy positions. Due to the increased skill level required for his position, the SDM must maintain a high level of proficiency through continued training of the required skills.
So what're the terminal ballistics of the 5.56 rd vs the 7.62 rd at 500m?

Both will really ruin your day out to 500 m. The barrel length of the 5.56mm platform becomes critical, an M4 tops out for probability of lethality around 400 m.(YMMV). The M16 tops out at about 600 m (this is second hand - for first hand numbers ask KevinB, Reaper, Hoddie etc.) The short barrel on the M4 reduces the velocity of the 5.56mm therefore it's capacity to do damage. I'm pleased to say that on paper targets at the local range both are 100% lethal to paper well beyond my ability to shoot.
The 7.62 mm more so!

SO, this guy goes to Iraq and then lies about being qualified on a rifle and then pimps it out himself over the internet. I don't think I would want to be relying on this person to save my a#$ in combat. He should have used an AK as it seems he was not on the front line anyways as he never mentioned any action.
