The dog and I headed off to Lake Manitoba this morning bright and early with about 16 decoys and a roboduck. A pair of redheads, two scaup, and four widgeon came home with us. Sunny, windy, and warm. The dog retrieved them all beautifully, with one especially long one that the wind took out. #4 steel Challenger 2-3/4" shells and a Mossberg 930 with IC choke were absolutely deadly as they came into the decoys. What more could a guy want?

A nice retrieve . . .

Good job Grouse Man. Could hear shooting on the marsh today from the cabin. Bit too warm for duck hunting I thought. Sat on the beach, swam and had a few cold ones! Any of the redhead drakes or just the youngsters?

Nice redhead drakes. The wind kept the temps pleasant and the bugs away. Pics are coming, just takes a while. Not a lot of birds flying, but I made the best of what came by.

Nice! Redhead are fine dining...we call them "ribeye of the sky". You have to get at those redheads and canvas quite early as most leave by early October

I'm envious Grouseman. I have a lodge at the northeast end of Delta. However work has necessitated a move to Ontario this past August. Don't know if I will have a chance to get back this year at all. Love your pictures....looks like the view from the east end of Clandeboye Bay.

Happy Hunting!

nice ......... im going this friday... only no dog...:) have a boat instead... :)

I'll make some pics...too

I have to report on how much her duck hunting behaviour has improved in just one year. Last season she was being bad in every possible way; running down the shoreline, swimming amongst and then retrieving the decoys, whining and jumping at the sight of birds, stealing recovered ducks for herself, and going back to the truck with the ducks! She decided not to listen, and she knew what the commands were. After much, much training and work on both our parts AND the use of an electronic training collar (as seen in the pictures), she's a completely different dog in the field. She sits or lays at my feet, doesn't bark or whimper at birds swimming in the decoys, brings the ducks directly to me, and doesn't run or swim off on her own. She even understands rudimentary hand signals (left or right) when out in the water. Each time she went out there were multiple birds down in the water and found them with only a little help from me. And she absolutely LOVES it! The sight of a gun case or smell from a hunting jacket sends her ballistic! She is such a joy to hunt with now. Except when I miss, and she gives me a look . . .

Congrats on a fine hunt Mr.G. We had a good shoot opening day but now my hunting is on hold as we bought a house and are moving this week. Good looking dog you got there too.
