Growing up my I had a set of "adopted grandparents". Nana and Uncle Neil never had children and thought of my family as theirs.
I knew Uncle Neil had served in the Great War but no details.

Were could I look to find more information if it is available?

This past weekend my Mom showed me some of his medals and momentos.

Below are some pictures, I am not sure what the brass item is - anyone know?

Enter the regimental number into the database of CEF soldiers at National Archives of Canada:

http://www.bac-lac.gc.ca/eng/discov...rst-world-war-1914-1918-cef/Pages/search.aspx

This will return the first 2 pages of the attestation papers. If you want the entire file you can send a cheque and they will photocopy everything they have and mail it to you. This will tell you what regiments he served in, medals issued, next of kin, etc. Lots of fun. By the way, the 160 CEF was the Bruce County Battalion based out of Walkerton Ontario - not too far from where I live.

The brass box looks like a cigarette pack container. Maybe a bit of trench art or something made up for the unit. The last one I saw was a bit different. It was supposedly made up in the trenches and came with a cover to keep their smokes dry. Your piece looks like the cover
