A short time ago, I came across a great deal on a used 77/17 in 17Mach2. It was in like new condition, but I was a little disappointed with the accuracy.Five shot 50 yard groups were averaging around 5/8", which to me wasn't satisfactory. I tried free floating the barrel, which opened the groups up to around 3/4".

I then discovered that Green Mountain made 77/17 barrels in 17Mach2, so I ordered a sporter weight, stainless fluted barrel in 17mach2. When I went to remove the factory barrel, it was quite sloppy in the receiver after the clamp bolts were released. The Green mountain barrel was more snug, and had to be tapped into place with a hammer on a wooden block. The Green Mountain barrel is slightly heavier in contour, but because of the fluting, the weight is similar. It took me about a half hour to change out barrels, and about the same to free float the new barrel.I sighted in the rifle with the new barrel this morning, and was quite pleased with five shot groups averaging almost exactly 3/8" at fifty yards. the The gun is a keeper, now I just need to do something about the way too heavy trigger pull.

The rifle.

Great looking rifle Stubby!!

Ive been thinking of doing the exact same conversion, but in Magnum form.

I have a ruger in .22 mag that shoots ok, and would love to rebarrel to .17

Where did you buy the green mountain barrel from??

I bought the barrel from Bitsofpieces out of B.C. The prices are fair, and the service is good. My bill totaled just under $209 with taxes and shipping.

Another nice one stubblejumper! For a quick and easy fix for the trigger, call up Volquartsen and get a target sear for the 77/17...it made a world of difference on mine. Note: don't get a 77/22 sear, as it may not work (mine didn't).

I did a little stoning, and cut down a CZ trigger spring out of a Yodave kit, and the trigger breaks cleanly at around two pounds. After selling the factory 17mach2 barrel, my total investment is still well under the price of a new 77/22.

Just checked the Green Mountain website.

I think I'm going to do a Blued sporter contour .17HMR on my 77/22Mag
and
a Blued Sporter contour .22Lr on my 10/22 Classic

I'm excited to see if these barrels will shoot as well as the one that Stubby has!!

I bought one of these barrels of the EE here last fall and installed it on one of my 10-22's. Similar results for me, tightened things up nicely. I now have at least 3 GM barrels on 10-22's and love them all. All were purchased used here on CGN.
