In one of his books, Andy Russel describes hunting with his 7x57 Greener-Mauser. Anyone know what that was?

He used it on his honeymoon. His bride had a Savage 99 in 250-3000.

They got two big mulie bucks and a bighorn ram. On their horseback honeymoon!

Greener Mauser

English gun makers commonly used Mauser actions to build a rifle on. I'm pretty sure what he is describing is a rifle assembled and finished by Greener using a Mauser action as the base of construction. Probably a very decent rifle as the English makers ensured proper feeding and overall function as well as mounting it all in a stock that suited English tastes (as opposed say to Bavarian stock styles). Basically a British Stalker style of rifle.

Thank you.

It was probably a tip or gift from a happy wealthy English client as Russel was a big game guide in the Rockies before they created Waterton Park.

Clayton Mack told of getting nice rifles as gifts too after a good hunt.

And retired guide Chilco Choate once loaned me an awesome set of German binoculars he got that way too.
