Time to say hello!

Joined a little over a week ago and have been reading...and reading...and reading...and then a little more reading.

First and foremost...I CURSE my brother-in-law for taking me hand-gun shooting (first time ever) over Christmas. :)

I have a little long gun experience but that was 25+ years ago so let's just say that I'm starting over.

Second...thank you to Guy at Silvercore (where I took my CFSC/CRFSC 3 weeks after Christmas and got 100% on written and practical (yes I'm proud :D)) for encouraging the students to join CGN and promoting it as a valuable resource. It absolutely has been so far. The brother-in-law nattered about CGN as well...but he's family.

My $ investment to-date...the training course only. No guns yet. The RPAL application goes out the door on Friday (lining up references) and I'll be following the advice laid out in the "Shorten PAL Approval Times" thread started by calalta in the Newbie FAQs section.

I do have my heart set on a GSG 1911 (lots of good feedback) as my getting started handgun...but...based on ALL the reading I've been doing lately, I think I'm going to take a proper handgun training course next BEFORE I invest in any firearms and seek out the wisdom of those who have gone before me.

"A smart man learns from his mistakes. A wise man learns from a smart man."

Cowboy Action Shooting looks like a heck of a lot of fun and is where my initial interest lies. But it looks too expensive to start out with right away (got a family to feed). I think I'm heading towards IDPA or perhaps Production IPSC. Who knows? Baby steps first.

Living in Maple Ridge, and reading feedback on the various gun clubs in the Lower Mainland of BC, it looks like PoCo (Burke), Mission, Abbotsford, Chilliwack, and Pitt Meadows (Thompson) are the ones I want to explore. DVC in PoCo may also serve a purpose as I get started. I'm also considering Silvercore's low cost ($15 for students) "no actual gun range" gun club membership which will allow me to get an "LTATT". This let's me try out the gun clubs with actual ranges on day-passes/invitations until I settle on which one(s) I want to call home long-term.

Lots to learn and looking forward to it.

Anyway...I CURSE you brother-in-law! I did not expect this level of interest, but your sister (my wife), did tell me to get a hobby!

And finally a hello to all, especially those who have posted and I've learned from already (gun clubs, buying experiences, gun quality, ammo quality, etc.)...THANK YOU!.

Jim

@Tiberius,

Hello from Delta and welcome to CGN!

There are a couple of things that may help you in your LTATT. First, when you get a membership to a club that supports handgun ranges, get a copy of the ATT application form (.PDF format) from the PC&DHFC (PoCo, Burke) web site. It is halfway down the main page (http://www.pcdhfc.com/). The file as a .PDF has been modified with Sticky Notes with advise as to what to fill out, how to fill it out and what to ignore. You'll have to change the primary 'shooting club or range' if you choose Mission or some other club over the PC&DHFC. Print it out and sign it, then fax it off together with a photocopy of your RPAL and membership information to the BC CFO. If you get the application right the first time, things will go through smoothly. The PC&DHFC is a great club and is home turf for 'Doc' Murray Gardner in case you are thinking of IPSC. Come out on the second and fourth Sunday of the month for trap. A non-member day pass (trap range only) is 5 bucks (games and shells extra)

one good thing about silvercore is that they give you a prefilled forum that you just name/date/sign for the ATT

i also am taking the course in the evening and my test is tonight, in about ~10 hours there instructor was awesome, made sure we understood it and kept it basic yet entertaining and i have learned a lot of things about long guns... as i already had some pistol experience

Thank you jeeped!

I'll be calling Murray (Doc) later this week to find out what training options he offers. PC&DHFC is high on the list of club choices for me and I will be checking it out.

Welcome to the club! :)
Do you have a good safe? Definitely an addictive hobby, so a good safe is a good idea to protect your investments!
I thought I'd only buy one gun and stop. But I'm 8 deep now. :dancingbanana:

Welcome Brother In Law!
And congratulations on getting BOTH your CFC and CRFC done at the same time!!!!!!!

I just called tonight and got the news that you were going out... I guess i am in the pooper now for sure!!!

GSG's are great guns, and for IDPA or IPSC standard, you might consider a CZ Shadow!

*L* Now we will have more family that can speak 'gun' together!!!!!

Thanks for the "safe" advice mr00jimbo.

No safe yet. No guns yet. No PAL/RPAL yet (but it's on its way...got the call from CFO today; all in order...should have it shortly after the 28 day wait.

Thank you Brother-in-Law!

Going to spend some time at DVC in Poco. Been there once...great service.

They have a GSG 1911 but it wasn't as enjoyable as I anticipated. I felt the Ruger was "better". But what do I know...I'm only 250 rounds into this. Guess I'll go back for more and work my way through a bunch of different guns before any buying decisions.
