Hi all,
I'm new to gun ownership. I got my FAC in order to hunt. I have a .22 LR and a 12 gauge shotgun. I got the 12 gauge (among other reasons) to go turkey hunting with this spring. As it turned out the weekend we'd planned on going out I was sicker than a dog. So I still actually haven't had a time to go out as an active participant.
I'm wanting to hunt for the enjoyment of being outside with good trustworthy friends and being closer to my ancestors who actually had to work for their dinner. I enjoy game meat and am looking forward to having a freezer full of it. I have a LEH for a white-tailed doe this fall which I'm pretty excited about. Now I'm just looking for a good .30-06 or 303 (possibly) to get accomplish that. The used .22 I bought this spring had problems with the extractor plunger during the summer so now I'm waiting to get that fixed. It is an older gun and so it is taking some time to get it repaired. So I'm not sure if I'm going to get out for grouse in September or not.

Welcome to the forum, Naidoo!

Well, I hand it to you to have picked some practical calibers!

The 12 gauge and .22 LR were my first picks years ago, and the .303 British was the first high power center fire cartridge that I owned (I got a sporterized No.4 MK.I for $69.)

I don't think you can go wrong with; .22lR, 12 gauge, and .30-06. They are all practical choices with a readily available selection of ammunition that is generally cheaper than most other calibers.

You should be able to find answers to most firearm related questions you may have here.

Cheers!

Thanks for the approval of my choices. Yeah, I've always liked the 303 British, I think b/c of all the history it has. I think the .30-06 seems to be just as, if not more, versatile for all I'll ever need it for.
Once the powers that be her decide I'm not a sociopath I hope to find one for sale on CGN. I've found a 303 and .30-06 for sale elsewhere online but am just a little nervous about buying sight unseen from someone I don't know.

Yeah, I like holding the rifle in my hands and personally inspecting it myself before I buy.

If you are looking for a sporterized milsurp, check out Lock, Stock & Barrel up by the McDonald's on McBride, and see what Gary has. Otherwise the Buy & Sell online has deals once in a while. If you want new, it is better to order from; Wholesale Sports in Alberta, S.I.R. in Winnipeg, or Bashaw Sports in Alberta. I got my best deals through them (you don't pay PST when you order from them.)

Nothing wrong with the .303 British as far as power and performance goes, I just personally hate rimmed cartridges now, including the .30-30.

However, I still have two full wood No.4 Mk.I*'s.:)

It doesn't get much better than .30-06! I finally gave up on the notion of buying a 7mm Rem Mag (or some new super-duper wonder round) and bought a LH Rem 700 BDL just before they vanished and were replaced by the CDL. I would have bought a LH Win 70 Classic in '06, but they were long gone by the time I started seriously looking.

BTW, I lived in New West for 7 1/2 years. Depending on where you live, it isn't a bad little city!:)

welcome and greetins from across the river ;)

yup yer on the right track with your hunting firearm quest. 30-06 is the best all arounder (common opinion anyways) for b.c. big game.

My favorite deer rifle after all these years is still a good ol tight shootin 303 brit...... and i never get tired of posting these pics from fall '07

Thanks all. Yeah, we love New Westminster but 'tis not without problem areas (like anywhere, I guess).
I've been accepted into the fold and so have been looking at all the private stuff listed here. It is nice that sellers have reviews of their performance.
I've also been looking at Tradex which seems to have a ton of Husky's which I hear are good solid hunters.
I go out for my deer (have a LEH white-talied doe) in just over a month.
