Just joined the forum after many months of surfing the 'net researching the latest and current thinking on firearms.
The background - In my early '20s I was introduced to firearms by a co-worker that had a handgun to sell. Not really being acquainted to firearms (my father had a couple of 22s) I thought this might be fun as he could guide me through the various legal BS that accompanies gun ownership in Canada.
Well the gun he sold me was a S&W 629. Needless to say I had a blast. In the ensuing years I bought a Colt .357, Colt Government model, Beretta 92FS, Ruger 10/22, Remington 870 and finally a Winchester 94 30-30.
This all came to an end when I got married and started producing progeny. The new bride said 'Get those things out of here - we don't want any accidents!' Well being the doting (and somewhat emasculated) father that I am I got rid of them.
Fast forward to 2006ish - the new 'long gun' registry in Canada meant that I had to register my Dad's '22s even tho he's been dead for 20yrs or I had to turn them in. Well I thought - if I have to go to all this trouble to keep a memory of my Dad, I'm going to create a few memories of my own.
So I went through the process of registering my Dad's guns and acquiring a new licence for myself. Because I had let my old licence expire, I had to go through the whole regimen again, and boy have the laws changed during the ensuing years! (THAT topic could fill many pages of this forum!)
Present day - After talking to alot of people, and doing alot of internet searching, I decided that my first gun back in the game was going to be a Beretta 391 because I like shooting in quantity and hitting moving targets is more fun than making holes in paper. So I joined a local gun club here and set about learning how to shoot clays. What I didn't (really!) anticipate was just how addicting clays shooting can be was so I bought a Beretta 682 Gold E.
The good news is that my wife is now onboard with my rekindled hobby and I have even taken my kids out (the oldest is now 17) and shown them how to handle a gun responsibly.
The future. IPSC has found place in Canada now and I think I would like to try my hand at that as well, so now I'm researching venues and pistol/calibers for participate in this sport too.
That about it for now - as at best I am a 2 fingered typist and this post has taken an extraordinary about of time to type...
