the only things close to gun experience i have is shooting a pellet gun

i dont really know what i would get at first, likly a .22 to learn on and then move up or can someone give me some good suggestions of what to do

Welcome! I suggest you start with your local paper- check the ads, there's often someone there offering the course. Your idea of starting with a .22 is an excellent one. Many of us who have been shooting for years started out on .22's, and continue to shoot them; they are a ton of fun, a good way to work on your skills, and they are cheap to feed!. Seriously, you can buy a brick of 500 rds for about 20.00 tax included. Thats a lot of shooting.
And now that you've joined us, please give some thought to joining a gun org such as CSSA and NFA. It is organizations like these that work to keep firearms in our hands. Click on the links in my sig line for more info.
Glad you found us. :)
