I just bought my first 1911, which is a Sig Sauer XO. I like the gun except for one thing...the grip safety. When holding the gun, the safety really sticks out quite a bit and I find it uncomfortable for prolonged shooting. I also don't find a grip safety necessary since it has another safety. I wanted some advice on changing the grip safety, grinding it flush & pinning it. Im worried that if I grind it, then my all black gun will have a shiny stainless ground down area on the grip. Just wondering what 1911 guys suggest is best ? Should I buy another drop in grip safety that sits more flush when gripping the gun, or is there a way to grind the original grip safety and send it out to get parkerised ? Im pretty sure regardless of the safety, that I will pin it so it will be fine to sit flush when engaged. I have other handguns with just a lever safety which is all thats needed.
Also, if I should buy a more flush fitting safety when engaged, what do you guys recommend as a decent extended beavertail safety (like the one on it) that is affordable ? and were to buy from ?
Has anyone ground there safety, and was able to make it match the colour of the gun ?
I really like the grip & feel of my CZ Shadow, so perhaps there are rubber grips available for a 1911 that cover the sides and the back, so it would hide the grind marks ? not sure if such 1911 grips are available from a company such as hogue ?
