Grinding Recoil Pads on Mastercraft Disc Grinder?

Hey everyone,

I've really bubba'd some recoil fitting jobs in the past and was thinking of getting the tools to do it right. I'm looking at the Brownells B&R jig and I just saw that CT has their Mastercraft 4" Belt/Disc Sander on sale. Does anyone know if this will work for what I want?

If not, any suggestions on a better option?

Thanks,

Cory

You will find a 10" or 12" disc much easier to use. With the small disc, assuming it's equipped with a table, you can't cut enough pad at one time without having part of the disc cutting on the upward rotation and part on the downward side. Some of the very soft pads available will "smudge" or smear when cut on the down rotation. That is they will pull extra material right out of the soft pad at the outer edges.

I use a jig similar to the one below. My 6" grinding disk is barely large enough to accommodate the jig and the pad and still do a decent job. As mentioned, a 10-12" would be the way to go.

If I could justify it, I'd get one of these.

I have used a Delta belt/disc sander for years, cheap, does a great job, and when it's crapped out, trash it and buy another!:)
I bought the blue belts from Lee Valley, they last a lot longer than the standard belts, and I also keep it clean with a crepe cleaner.

The one you are asking about is how I do recoil pads, but I use the belt part of it not the disc. My recoil pad installs look better then alot of the "professional" ones I have seen/replaced.
