Pachmayr Grippers and Presentations for square back frames are your best bet. They work because the rubber covers the backstrap.
Rubber grips that don't cover the backstrap, like Hogue mono grips don't mitigate the recoil. They just focus the impact over a smaller surface area.
I should add that the exception for Hogue are the X frame grips which are full wrap around but only for round butts.

I too am developing arthritis in my hands. I find the Pachmeyer Presentation grips are about the softest feeling. And they come in S and L for the N frame S&W. - dan
+ 1 on Pachmayr's rubber grips for softening recoil.
But dont bypass a well designed wood grip that will fit the hand properly. I tend to favor Walther Roper's design on big Smiths as seen on these 2...29-4 at the bottom sporting a Herretts made Roper & top 24-3 with the same Roper style (custom grip) Another plus of these is the natural pointability they offer...

You might also try to find a shooting glove. I friend gave me one, a bunch of years ago. Looks a bit like a driving glove, with open fingers. There is a recoil pad (neoprene?) sewn into the palm - maybe 1/4" thick or so. Softens the recoil at least as much as any grips I've tried. No idea who sells them or where you'd find one - but it does work very well.

Good advice, and I hear Herrett is back in business. I have a few sets of their stocks (yes, that is what they call them) for various handguns. Well made, designed, and good looking to boot. - dan
You'll still need a proper fitted stock. Magnums of any stripe will smash the hand and wrist up a bit otherwise.
