Just wondering if there are any Grizzlies in the squamish area? last week I was black bear hunting in the Elaho Valley and was following some bear tracks down to the river. After crossing the road I saw the trail was blocked off with yellow caution tape, I also noticed a sign warning of a bear in the area, I got excited thinking I was going to find one, then I took a second look at the sign as I passed it and it said Grizzly in the area. I thought it might be a mistake but didn't go any further down the trail as I didn't want to encounter a Grizzly. The tracks were fresh but the ground was so dry I could only make out the pads and couldn't see the claw marks.

Well I heard that they are at the top end of Pemberton valley and during a review of a hydro project they mentioned the edge of the range was along the mountains to the north of whistler, so it would not surprise me that they are pushing south.

Definately griz in the Elaho. But very few from what i understand. However, i think they've been there for a few years now, so the population will be growing.

Gatehouse said a few years ago he figured it was only going to be 5 or 10 years before we saw them in the north shore mountains. He's probably right.

Yup, what they said!:)

There even used to be some grizzlies in Whistler, but eventually that really "Eco Friendly" thing called a ski hill pretty much eliminated them. As well as the goat populaiton of Whistler, too.

But grizzlies are increasing in numbers, and like I said..Expect to hear of a grizz in West Van (or Lions Bay/Furry Creek ec) wihtin a few years...:dancingbanana:

In the old days, when I still had 2 good knees, I used to hike/climb all over that country. The Squamish, Ashlu and the Elaho valleys were my gateway to the whole Tantalus range... and off the other side of the river, above Woodfiber from Henriette lake, is some good hiking - Mt. Sedgewick, Coneybear, Pelops, etc down into Lake Lovely Water.

There were definately no Grizz then (30 years ago) but there were blacks!

Is there still a herd of Elk being studied in there someplace?

Well there is a significant population of grizz in the Ashlu and Elaho, and a few spottings along the Squamish river even. I believe the occasional Elk are migratory from the transplanted populations on the sunshine coast and McNab creek. I think as of lately, it would not be completely out of the question to see grizz anywhere at all really. One could easily end up in the North Shore mountains after only a short migration from where they are known to be right now.

No grizzly near my folks' place up close to squamish (britannia beach) yet, however their house is a few hundred meters from "the woods" and "the mountains".

I did notice a black bear #### in our yard last time i was mowing the lawn, 3 weeks ago, lol.

I will love to see the bear huggers face when the first grizz rips apart somebodies garage to get to the garbage, pet food, pet.:p

Squamish Grizz

I took this pic in July 2006 while scouting in the Elaho River Valley.

The signs were put up because some braindead campers left thier campsite like a total pig pen and a grizz came through for dessert. Scared the life out of them I hear. You think they'll have a messy camp again?
