Can someone help me, I,m tired of trying to get the search engine to work properly and have give up. I know theres probably tonnes on info on this topic but-

I have a grizz 12.5 barrel and would like to add the stock pistol grip to it will that classify it as restricted.

Some say yes some say no?

Was there ever a definate answer.

Thanks

Is the overall length greater than 26 inches? Yes non restricted, no restricted.
Nowhere in the law does it state that if it is less than 26" it is restricted.

The search is easy, just highlight all the forums, and select 36 months. There are several threads.

The question at hand "is it designed to be fired with 1 hand?" if so it's a handgun and thus restricted. The firearms tech that I emailed at the RCMP said that if the police agency uses the RCMP interpretation of what a pistol gripped shotgun, then it'll be a handgun and thus restricted.

In the FRT is states it "may" be considered a handgun. They are using the US rifle rule of 16" as a baseline.

Personally, I don't consider a 12ga with a PG to be a handgun, I don't know many who do.

Actually, they say it may be restricted. Very different.

The NFA states 26" is only if "folding or telescoping" and if shortned by these means, is prohibited, no mention of restricted.

DT is actually incorrect an several points in those articles:

i.e. Substituting a factory barrel of less than 18" does not create a prohib.

We have been over this 100 times, in dozens of threads. I am not going to retype it all.

From the CC definition of a restricted firearm:

A firearm that can fire after being reduced, by folding, telescoping or otherwise, to an overall length of less than 660 mm

It only becomes a prohibited firearm if it is altered to become less than 660mm.

"designed or intended" that is the main point. See post #5. That is why the RCMP say "may" be restricted. They have yet to say "is" restricted in writing AFAIK.
