Advice.
My brother applied for a spring Grizzly hunt in the zone listed above....which is located west of Bella Coola. I learned recently that we each obtained a spring grizzly tag......My question is this.....are grizzly so easy to get? Is no body submitting for the tags these days ? or were we just lucky to each recieve a tag?
This is the first time we have applied, I was under the impression that these tags may be few and far between.....anybody familar with this area ? How lucky were we? I need a little convincing to get some motiviation to go on this hunt....

Thanks

Rob

How's this for motivation: Imagine you're an Alberta resident who diligently applied year after year for a grizzly tag... eight years, in fact. You finally build up enough priority points to pull a tag in the desired zone, and WHAMMO!!! The grizzly hunt is cancelled province-wide -- seemingly for good.

Anyone who has any desire whatsoever to hunt grizzly and actually has a resident tag in hand deserves a swift kick in the nuts if he stays home to watch football instead!!! :p

Seriously, count your blessings. With my hopes of doing this in Alberta now gone, I've had to save up the last few years for a grizzly hunt in Alaska. Fortunately, this is the year I'll finally make that trip (September), but it sure would have been nice to be able to make an attempt here at home rather than have to shell out US$15,000 for the outfitter, tags, airfare, etc. Of course, it's only money ;)

That area is pretty desirable for grizzly hunters, the odds are not good. You were lucky.

I assume you and your brother did quite a bit of research prior to applying for that area? The access is difficult, you need a largish boat or/plane.

You applied so instead of becoming the helping hand to the envirmentalists get off your butt and get out for the potential trip of a life time...

When grizzly/bear hunting in the spring I always look for south facing slopes/slides that get the best sunlight exposure these produce the earliest/best vegetation growth so the bears hang out in these kinds of areas.

That might be a strong contributing factor to the availability of tags in that zone.

i had a draw 3 springs ago,zone-b tho, hellish, overgrown, with no access.where your going you need to have a boat,or charter one from the village.i priced it out when i was there and it was $4000.good luck if you go,theres big,big bears in that country!!

I wish it were so...The odds usually run abotu 12:1, not good for grizzly odds.

Quite a few people put in for coastal grizzly hunts not knowing what sort of commitment it is and then dont' go.:(

So, do you guys load your quads on the boat, and drop them in/near your zone, or is it all Shanks Pony (walking)?
Given the size of these bears, the hide and head must weigh over 150 lbs green.

There is no bigger prick than the one who applies for a tag "just in case" then gets it and realizes he can't go hunting that year anyway.

You're screwing over people who would bend over backwards for a chance to go.... I wish people wouldn't even apply unless they can actually use a tag, they're no bloody good for hanging on the fridge while you spend all hunting season with your head up your ass.

exactly and this is a ever growing problem with the LEH system, yes it would be alot of pain in the azz work but in the LEH paper it should state how to get in an area, fly/boat/horseback etc, not just grizz its all species

Can draw winners return their tag for redraw in the event they cannot go?

I'm thinking that this is something that could be addressed they probably have a list on hand of the runner ups and the tag could be redirected.

Bonez I kind of disagree, I'm thinking that a person should be responsible enough to have done some research on the area before they apply for a tag or they should not have applied.

Both my son and I were drawn again this year for spring grizzly we know where we are going and are not asking anyone for help, we are inviting a few buddies to join in on the hunt if they are free though.

We're also doing a bit of fishing in the Nation Lakes some big fish around at that time of year... ;)

Wild Life Designs the taxidermist in 150 Mile House where I left my grizzly hide just called he has my grizzly that I shot last year ready to put the backing material on it sounds like it measures 9' nose to tail... :D

well Camp that is true but sadly they dont!, look at the moose area I go to 50 tags odds are 6.5:1 and only a dozen people ever get there..oh yea you need a boat/bardge etc and atv once your there but every year a dozen guys are asking at the sports shop "how do we get there"

There isn't really anywhere ot quad to in the area I went.

There was an old deactivated road, but it's full of blow down, and washed out bridges.

We walked, took a boat up the river (interesting, depending on water levels) and spot and stalked...I wish I coudl find the story I posted a few years ago about it.

It was an honest story of a hunting trip- blunders and all!:D

I might add that my buddy put in for the tag without knowing abot how to get there- I had mentioned that there were big bears in Bella Coola, and he applied without ever looking at a map..It pissed me off at the time, but I am glad we persevered.

We managed to put a trip together, but there was lots I'd do differently. This is not a place that you want to be screwing around. We were there for a week and had zero human contact. No planes overhead, no boats going by, nothing.

Just out of curiosity.......

Anyone have any stats as to how many "bunny huggers" apply for the Grizzly LEH's and don't hunt them.

I know of a few people here that applied for bison when it was a draw all in the name of saving one cute bison?

I keep hearing about the big bunny hugger conspiracy, and I am sure that it happens a bit, but they woudl have to spend lots of $$$ to actually make a difference.
